In the past, most psychiatric hospitals were ineffective at actual treatment, serving more as prisons for the mentally ill. They also admitted excessive numbers of patients, and reasons for admission were often questionable. The archetypical insane asylum, especially when long-abandoned, is inexorably linked to the horror genre and has become something of a cliche.
