The 2011 Heisman Trophy Award winner, Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, was announced as the cover athlete for NCAA Football 13 on February 27, 2012. Barry Sanders appears on the cover along side Robert Griffin III, he was selected by fans through a list of previous Heisman Trophy Award winners. Other finalists in the voting included Marcus Allen, Doug Flutie, Eddie George, Desmond Howard, Herschel Walker (Character), Charlie Ward, and Andre Ware.
