Overview

LEGO Dimensions is a toys-to-life action-adventure game developed by Treveller's Tales and published by WB for the Xbox One (Platform), PlayStation 4 (Platform), Wii U (Platform), Xbox 360 (Platform), and PlayStation 3 (Platform) on September 27, 2015.

Playing similar to the studio's other games based on LEGO (Franchise) toys, Dimensions combines various LEGO themes (including Ninjago and Legends of Chima) with pop-culture franchises owned by Time Warner (including the DC Universe (Franchise), various films, and Cartoon Network (Franchise) cartoons) and guest crossovers (such as Chell (Character) from the Portal (Franchise) series and Sonic the Hedgehog (Character)).

Similar to the Skylanders (Franchise) and Disney Infinity (Franchise) series, the game utilizes a special "toy pad" peripheral that allows players to swap between characters and other content using near-field communication found in the bases of special toys (which are built from traditional LEGO minifigures and models, several of which are sold separately). Additional expansion "packs" were released up to 2017.

The main antagonist of the story is the mysterious Lord Vortech (Character), whose goal is to become ruler of the LEGO Multiverse by controlling the twelve Foundation Elements and merging all LEGO Universes together. It's up to three of the greatest heroes of numerous LEGO universes (Batman (Character) from the DC Universe (Franchise), Gandalf (Character) from The Lord of the Rings (Franchise), and Wyldstyle (Character) from The LEGO Movie) to recruit help from other universes and stop Vortech's plans.

Vehicles can be altered in real life to change their appearance and abilities in game also. For instance the DeLorean from Back To The Future can change from Time Machine to Electric Time Machine to its final form Ultra Time Machine.

Starter and Expansion Packs

LEGO Dimensions was sold with a platform-specific $99.99 "Starter Pack", containing the game itself, the Gateway peripheral, three character minifigures (Batman (Character) from DC Comics, Gandalf (Character) from The Lord of the Rings (Franchise), and Wyldstyle (Character) from The LEGO Movie), and one vehicle/gadget model (The Batmobile). In addition, the game received four different types of expansion packs:

Fun Packs, originally sold for $14.99, contain 1 character minifigure and 1 vehicle/gadget model.
Team Packs, originally sold for $24.99, contain 2 character minifigures and 2 vehicle/gadget models.
Level Packs, originally sold for $29.99, contain 1 character minifigure and 2 vehicle/gadget models. The minifigure base can be used to play a bonus level.
Story Packs, originally sold for $49.99, contain 1-2 character minifigures, one vehicle/gadget model, and a bonus decorative model addition for the Gateway. The minifigure base can be used to play a bonus six-level campaign.

Unlike most other toys-to-life products, these were sold as "building toys" and are traditional lego minifigures and models, with only the bases containing the information for the Gateway to read. The color of each of the toys' bases correspond to their release year (with Waves 1-5 having a blue base and Waves 6-9 having an orange base).

Some characters, vehicles, and gadgets have special properties in-game, such as certain characters being able to crawl through small tunnels in parts of the game for exclusive rewards. Some Packs can be used to play bonus content, such as the Midway Arcade Level Pack including 20 playable classic Midway arcade games.

Two additional DC Comics character minifigures were released as special promotional polybags: Supergirl (Character) (71340) and Green Arrow (Character) (71342).
