Overview
Action 52 is the name of two unlicensed mini-game collections developed and published by Active Enterprises in North America, first for the Nintendo Entertainment System (Platform) in 1991, then for the Sega Genesis in 1993 (co-developed by FarSight Technologies).
Inspired by bootleg multicart releases at the time, each of the two collections feature 52 unique mini-games with varying genres and themes. It was originally sold for a very high retail price of $199, with the justification being that each mini-game is a full-featured game equating to around $4 each. However, all of the games included are known for their subpar quality, both contemporary and retrospectively, with the NES version being infamous for being either glitchy or nonfunctional (even after its later revision).
Action 52 is best known for its anthropomorphic cheetah mascots, known as "The Cheetahmen". Comprised of leader Apollo, martial artist Aries (Character), and hulking brawler Hercules, the trio are playable in the NES version's flagship "Action Gamemaster" mini-game, which was originally planned to have the trio infiltrate several games in the collection. They also star in the sole Action 52 commercial with a cartoon-animated appearance, and each copy of the NES version's release included a comic book detailing the trio's backstory (where they were genetic experiments from the evil Doctor Morbis).
A third collection for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Platform) was planned, but was cancelled as Active Enterprises left the game industry. A standalone sequel to the NES version's "Action Gamemaster" mini-game, known as Cheetahmen II, was in production before also being cancelled in 1992, with an unfinished version being recovered from a warehouse in the mid-to-late '90s.
