Overview
Don't Buy This, also known as Don't Buy This: Five of the Worst Games Ever, is a game collection published by Firebird for the ZX Spectrum (Platform) exclusively in Europe in 1985.
It is a self-deprecating collection of five games sent to the publisher to publish, all of which were compiled together as a joke due to their low quality.
Game List
- Race Ace, known in-game as Ace Racer, is a simple car racing game where players race against eight other computer-controlled cars in a single track. The game moves at a sluggish pace (almost turn-based), with cars only being able to turn in 90-degree angles and the track having three "lanes" for cars to occupy. It is also impossible to win.
- Fido, also known as Fido 1, puts players in control of a dog as he moves across the field, sitting down and whacking moles that are popping up from the ground with his tail. His stamina is also constantly depleting, which can be refilled by eating from his food bowl, and he must take care to avoid various obstacles (such as birds and cats).
- Weasel Willy is a variation of the "snake game" genre, with players guiding the ever-moving protagonist around an enclosed field full of trees for a short amount of time, taking care not to hit any tree of their previous footsteps. Both the trees and the protagonist's position are placed at random, sometimes making it impossible to win.
- Fido 2, known in-game as Puppy Power, builds on the original Fido by allowing the dog to move around like a belt-scroller. Rather than eating from his food bowl, the dog can now only regain health by firing beams from his eyes at other obstacles.
- Fruit Machine is a basic virtual slot machine, with four reels that spin sluggishly. Players are given a single pound, with each spin costing 10 pence. Along with buttons to hold each reel, players can win "nudges" to step a reel forward.
