E3 2002
CONCEPT
The 2002 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California on May 22-24.

Overview

South Hall

E3 2002 was all about the concept of taking games online. The Dreamcast (Platform) was simply ahead of its time. Sony announced that their Network Adapter would allow players to test their skills online in EA Sports (Company) titles, a new Navy SEALs game called SOCOM, a console version of the immensely popular EverQuest, a new version of Resident Evil, and even alongside PC (Platform) gamers in Final Fantasy XI. Microsoft laid the groundwork for what they called Xbox Live (Concept), a premium service with a subscription fee that would link all of online exploits together via one single username they called a GamerTag. This would allow players to see their friends online and what game they were currently playing at any time. Microsoft also announced that the kit that came with the purchase of a one year subscription would come with a headset for voice chat. Also, the service would only be available on broadband, which was not exactly commonplace at the time, but guaranteed quality experiences online.

The PC crowd was also talking about online gaming thanks to Blizzard's unveiling of World of Warcraft (Game) and Sony Online Entertainment's introduction of Star Wars Galaxies and continued focus upon the EverQuest (Franchise) franchise with a new expansion and a glimpse into EverQuest II (Game).

Nintendo (Company) wasn't in on the whole online craze. Instead, they focused on blockbuster titles such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine (Game), and Metroid Prime (Game). They also introduced their wireless GameCube (Platform) controller known as the Wavebird.

Of all the other games at the show, the most popular was easily Doom III, which dominated the discussion at Activision (Company)'s booth. Sequels were quite popular at this years's show. Capcom (Company) brought sequels for both of their new hits, Devil May Cry and Onimusha. Konami offered up a new Zone of the Enders following the success of the first, which came with a demo of Metal Gear Solid 2. Namco brought Tekken 4 (Game) to the PS2 from the arcades. And Tecmo announced they'd be bringing a remake of Ninja Gaiden exclusively to Xbox.

Original titles still existed, however, and many would soon become household names to the industry. Titles such as Battlefield 1942 (Game), Splinter Cell, Kingdom Hearts (Game), Xenosaga, MechAssault (Game), and Psychonauts (Game) all made their presence known at E3 2002.

Games of the Show

West Hall

The games listed below not only include those playable on the show floor, but any game referenced at the show. This would include video presentations, announcements, advertisements, or any other official reference to the game from its developer, publisher, or platform. They are listed mainly according to the publisher of the game, with a few exceptions where the publisher did not attend the show. An example of this would be a hardware company such as Nintendo or nVidia showing a game not developed or published by them. In several situtations, games either changed their title or even their publisher before they were released. For historical accuracy in chronicling E3, such games will be listed with their original names and publishers, and linked to the corresponding page of the final game.
