A while back

Microsoft infamously publicly acknowledged that, yes, the 360 was fucked. The notorious Red Ring Of Death had plagued an entire generation of consoles. Ironically many users found themselves digging out old Gamecubes and PS2's while their "next Generation" was repaired over the course of several agonising weeks. Microsoft extended warranties and handed out pitiful compensation in the form of free gold accounts and arcade games. Despite acknowledging that there are issues with their console there has been very little visual productive activity to prevent this from happening. It obvious to see however that RRoD's are getting thin on the ground. People are still having issues. In a dangerous leap of opinion, as someone who is extensively around computers, render farms, software and general electronic equipment, I would like to present the completely useless and dishonourable notion that:

Sometimes, shit just breaks?

It's a terrible excuse. It really is. But it's still an excuse. As RRoD consoles are gradually weaned out of circulation the issues people seem to be having with their 360's are a lot more trivial, a lot more along the lines of "It broke unexpectedly, the 360 is such a heap of shit". People forget that most hardware that they are given isn't put under such strain. I know my own 360 has clocked a fair amount of hours simply sitting invitingly waiting me to pick up a controller. Do you have any other piece of machinery  which is put under such constant electronic scrutiny, other than a TV? Your car perhaps? And cars NEVER break down, right? No computers are perfect. No console is devoid of issues. Sometimes, shit DOES just break. Ask anyone who works in IT. At my university it's usually called something like "maya voodoo".

It's depressing how quick people are to attack the 360 for the RRoD. I don't make a habit of listening to the fanboys - down that road, madness lies - but that seems to be their default argument. Well, this isn't me defending "my console". It's me reflectively accepting that, yes - the console I chose to purchase is flawed. I do not care. The amount of enjoyable hours I have spent playing my 360 far outweigh the time I have spent raging at Microsoft for being such cunt suckers. For every 1 day I sat waiting for my 360 to be repaired there were months I spent enjoyably carving my way through an assortment of international zombies.

In a perfect world, we wouldn't have to deal with this shit. The world isn't perfect. I'm ok with that.

Those are my 2 cents on the whole shenanigan.

It's a thin line between defending a console and becoming a fanboy. I'd rather not take part in the latter and it's making the [POST BLOG] button increasingly hard to press. I don't want to encourage fanboyism, but at the same time there is definitely room for discussion on this subject without some cretin going "halo is for noobs". I'm writing about the 360 because that's the console I own. Please note I have not attacked any other console in this entire blog. So, please try to keep all replies rational. Thank you =)
