Over the past week or so I have been taking advantage of the horrendously underpriced games on Steam, to the extent that I have more games than I really know what to do with right now. Here are some impressions:
Mirrors Edge || £3
I FINALLY got around to buying Mirrors Edge, a game that I fretted over last year but dismissed because of it's short campaign. I have played a solid few hours of Mirrors Edge and I would like to confirm my initial impressions from last year are mostly true. The game looks stunning, the modelling is great. The style is very smooth and ambient, with a gritty undertone that's really fresh. Love it. The Motion is pretty good as well, though the animations of other characters are a bit lacking. The world can sometimes feel a bit deserted, though that may be through design. The combat sucks, and is actually counter productive to the fluency of your run-and-jump adventure. Whenever you hear the words "blue's ahead, looks like your going to have to fight them!" you just know it's going to take several attempts. It does add a nice sense of vulnerability to the running though. If combat was too easy then there wouldn't be any point in running, right? The game only really seems to falter when you aren't given a choice. Anyways, really enjoying Mirrors Edge - and no sense of buyers remorse with the insane price-tag. Zeno Clash || £3
Fuck, this game is incredible! It's like being slapped in the face by Salvador Dali. Everything about this game is batshit crazy but I love it. The combat is just weird, the characters are suitably nightmarish. The voice acting is, so far, really good. It's very surreal and gloomy whilst being bright-coloured and cartoony at the same time. Brilliantly stylized, brutal action. After Mirrors Edge there's a nice contrast to some half-decent First Person combat. I really like the individuality to all the characters and the bizzare world that is never really explained. If there's anything about this game that I appreciate, it's the maturity behind the concept and it's translation. It ain't flawless, but it's interesting in ways that so many other titles cease to be. It takes gamers out the comfort zone of familiarity. Beautiful.
Eve Online || £4
I decided to take a second attempt at Eve and i'm enjoying it a lot more. I'm playing the game in small chunks, doing a couple of missions here and there and then logging off - I really appreciate the way that the game continues to train your skills even while you aren't playing. Sort of removes the issue of grinding completely. Since the Dominion expansion just got patched in everything looks much nicer as well. A lot of people worry about the learning curve in Eve - well, more the fact that there is no learning curve. I haven't really found this a problem. The game is very technical, it's basically a point-and-click MMO, but there are always loads of other players who all seem to love giving advice and arguing over which ship is most suitable for you depending on what you want to do. The scale of progression is truly staggering - overwhelming to the point that I don't actually know where i'm heading as I continue to complete missions. All I know is, I can see huge fuck-off spaceships flying past me and I WANT ONE. The Secret Of Monkey Island: Special Edition || £2
As soon as I bought this supermooseman opened up a chat window and started wetting himself. After hearing him blather on about it for so long I decided that £2 was probably a fair price for what is considered one of the "classics". I haven't really got stuck into it yet, but it's nice to finally find out what all the fuss is about. I have just got a message from steam telling me Tomb Raider Underworld is £4.99. FUCK that's tempting. I still have Left 4 Dead 2 and Modern Warfare 2 to play as well! I haven't even hit my first prestige :(
