A Modest Proposal

This isn't a gaming blog at all, but it's something that's been on my mind a little. This is fairly political, so just warning you, ahead of time.

The 2nd Amendment is both a curse & a blessing. It is a blessing, because, at the time, there was a fear that the British might try and do some chicanery again, so a well-regulated Militia (Army, etc.) check is fine, and a right to bear arms (personal defense), is also relatively fine.

It's a curse, now, because you have all these gun nut, usually Southern, Republican, States-rights-loving, anatomically-inadequate guys, running around, trying to get the largest caliber weapon they can (to make up for their own deficiencies), with the idea that they'll become a "Real Man", by having said gun.

This *IS NOT* what the framers of the Constitution had in mind. Right to bear arms is fine, Right to bear enough firepower to make a run into Baghdad, NOT so fine.

So, here is my modest proposal:

If you would like to bear Arms, fine. You will be allowed to have as many as you want. Provided, they are from the time-period, in which the Constitution was written. So, this is in reference to Flintlock weaponry (Muskets, Pistols, the occasional very dangerous & unreliable Shotgun), things like that. So, a person could walk around with their Brown Bess rifle, free & clear. Keep in mind, this is for "safety" (in the gun nut's eyes), however if you do get attacked by someone, you better be a DAMN good shot, otherwise, the 15 seconds or so (if you're skilled) it takes to reload, might cost you some time.

If you would like a firearm past the 18th Century, that's also fine. You'll have to take gun safety classes, possibly get gun insurance, have the gun fully registered, etc.

I feel this is a good proposal for pro-gun (nuts) and anti-gun (sane) people. It'd give both groups what they want. Anti-Gun people would be more secure in the knowledge that they've made the world actually safer. And they could get a gun as well (assuming they're responsible with it). Pro-Gun people would LOVE it, because they could get as many guns as they want. Provided that weapon was manufactured before 1791. Sorry, no Baker Rifle allowed. It has the added bonus of making them feel more "Manly" as well, being forced to carry around a (roughly) 5 foot long, wooden, phallic instrument. Just like theirs though, the Musket can only file one small bullet at a time, then must be manually reloaded. Ah well.

My proposal would have the added bonus of (likely) causing a great deal of harm to Pro-Gun people. It's not like Black Powder is a safe substance, or muskets were a stable item. This would be even better, really.

So, Pro-Gun people, you cool with this?
