For fans of Robotech, Battlecry seems like a game that is a decent adaptation. It uses the voice actors from the show, but tells a new story where you experience the events from the show from the perspective of a new character, Jack Archer. The cel-shaded look not only captures the style of the show really well, but also means that the game still looks really nice now.

Robotech centres around special aircraft that have three forms: a jet, a mech and something halfway between. The jet is for high speed aerial combat, the mech is for ground combat and the half form is something you’ll only begrudgingly use to pick up stuff, as it’s frustrating to control but the only one that can collect objects. While you can swap at any time, the game’s biggest weakness is that the levels aren’t designed for it: some are jet levels, some are mech levels. The mech levels feature lots of invisible walls so you can’t go high.

The objectives don’t change that much through the game, either, and many levels are just blasting stuff for ages and then the level ends (often in a way that makes it feel like you weren’t important to the fight at all). The mech and jet forms are fun to play as, but the game doesn’t really utilise its main mechanics very well.
