Okay i decided to translate one of the best reviews i've written, in google translater and the spending all day correcting all the stupid translations that fucking program makes, so i hope you will all look away from all the flaws and just ask if you can't understand it
Anywho here it is:
I have always had a love for the platform games, from the first Rayman, to Sly and the Ratchet & Clank series. The genre seems too have died on a few consoles, Mirror's Edge now seem to have reinvented the genre, although nobody can call this a pure platform game.
When I write a review, I try to be as objective as possible, so more people can get something out of it. But I try to get my own opinions to shine through, an incredibly difficult combination, which can be key to write a good review. But this time it will be an extremely subjective review, because Mirror's Edge is probably one of the games that will be loved or hated.
Since I saw the first trailer, I have been in love, I remember clearly how my jaw dropped, while thinking if this game is like this, then I will be extremely happy. Thankfully the developers have kept what they promised at the time. The game was developed by DICE best known for their Battlefield series, they have really taken a huge leap (of faith) along with some huge chances, and they have landed on their feet and have created something amazing.
You play as Faith, a Runner. Runners, a bunch of athletic Pakour exercisers, are the only real source of information in an over-controlled society where everything and everyone is monitored constantly. The entire population has pretty much accepted the monitoring. Runners make sure that the information is being delivered to the few who want the old world back.
One day the mayor candidate, working to get the city rid of surveillance, is murdered and Faith’ sister, Kate who works for the police, are arrested for the murder, Kate is obviously innocent, and it’s up to Faith to cleanse her name. The story is told through some cutscenes, that’s going to be either hated or loved, I personally felt neither. They aren’t pretty, but they aren’t ugly either, they remind a lot about the ads from Esurance, and those, who haven’t seen American television, can check youtube.
The story could have been very good, unfortunately the time isn’t spend to tell it to tell it. The cutscenes are only in the game, so you a reason to travel to the different game, and as a transition between the levels. I never felt something for the characters, a pity because there’s indeed some good and surprising plot twist.
DICE has really been involved in a risky project, an action / adventure platform game set in 1 person all the way is simply stunning and innovative. God knows I have played some free-running / Pakour games, they have poor controls and a lousy camera, but Mirror's Edge has also had problems with motion sickness.
Let’s cut to the chase. The controls is a bit different than I would’ve expected, since almost all management takes place from the shoulder buttons, a brilliant decision because it makes it much easier to get into the role, simply because it is not normal. The controls is mostly perfect, there may be problems when it comes to do a wallrun as it is done by pressing the jump button. It is amazing to see how complicated it looks when you look at another guy playing it, but when you hold the controller in your hand is the controls easy and natural.
Mirror's Edge has really been a huge pleasure to play, mostly because of the gameplay which gives me the same feeling as the trailer did, and has many Holy Shiit moments which I have poetically chosen to call them. The game is filled to the bursting point with heart galloping, intense action, whether you are chasing a helicopter, or surviving a murderous jump, the heart rate jumps so high, that the damn thing will sit under the tongue, large parts of the game.
Mirror's Edge goes against the flow by wanting you to be a pacifist, and helped by a stylistic disarmament system that offers some brutal scenes. The pacifist thing, is a good idea at the beginning of the game when enemies are easier and come one at a time, but as the Swat people are beginning to emerge, like a three to four people at a time, the fighting becomes a torment, and the biggest criticism of the game, especially if you decide to complete the game without shooting a single enemy. S.W.A.T. Members are extremely difficult to disarm, and a meeting with more than one of these being fatal, also I find it hard to believe, that a slim Faith, which apparently can survive falls from almost inhuman heights, but she has one leg in the grave after two hits, with a gun barrel, but perhaps it is just me? Especially the seventh level in the game stands for me as the worst in terms of enemies, the seventh level also offers the game's only real fistfight which is abnormally frustrating.
The core gameplay is fantastic, I enjoy running around the world, even if the game focused heavily on momentum, it's so easy to love those moments where you are waiting to jump, as it surely has experienced similar in the playground when I was a small child, when you should make the big leap from swing to swing, or something similar. The game focuses on trial and error which for some will be a big problem, amazingly enough I didn’t mind the Trial and Error, or least when it came to the platform sequences, it gave me the opportunity to refine and test new routes, but some will certainly find just as annoying as the fighting against the police, and you should really be aware of precisely what aspect of the game, that might annoy you, because it is amazing individual if you like that part or not.
Load times are a problem, there is no genuine loading screen as such, but you spend a good time being in an elevator while the world seems loader around you, it is possible to read the news, but it is not something that adds an extra depth of history, and near the last elevator ride, it's a pain to be locked up, added some strange small loaded inside the game.
Mirror's Edge separates itself from almost everything we've seen before in so many areas, including the graphic presentation, everything is white, clinical and sterile with the exception of the pastel. Technically speaking, the graphics not that nice, but like the rest of the game there’s just something special about it. Environments is very well balanced, there’s everything from rooftops, to sewers and large malls. There are two bright colors throughout the game, the color black, as represent Swat and the color red, which is a tool that guides you the right way, not necessarily the fastest, you will have to find that yourself. The sterile design, makes the message about the surveillance society clear, the game also contains a certain symbolism, rats that crawl around everywhere in the city, may well be a way to show how dirty and corrupt city is, the strict monitoring is being used by those with power, so they can control everything. There is absolutely no HUD, only a small circle in the middle of the screen is to find in the game, it is to prevent nausea, but it can be turned off for a 100% 1 person experience.
I would not have gone in depth with the sound, but I thought it was stunning, the sound of Faith breathing, shoes against the wall, and the wind swish blended with shots, flying around your ears, just works. If we look away from the small details in the actual game itself, the music is dazzling beautiful, I've really caught myself to dwell at the menu music, and it fits perfectly with the clean design and as The icing on the cake, the Mirror's Edge features, one of the best game soundtracks ever, with Sweden's Lisa Miskovsky Still Alive.
Unfortunately, the Mirror's Edge is very brief, a 5-7 hour experience, and there’s not much to return, Time Trials and speedruns and 30 bags hidden around the game, it's certainly not something that appeal to everyone, although it is quite good pastime. The replay value, depends on how much you like the concept, I'm already my fourth through play through and enjoying it more each time. Here I also get angry, that there’s not been used much time on story, telling a better story could have given some extra playing time and made everything more complex.
Mirror's Edge has been a brilliant experience when you jump, climb, slide and run on the walls several hundred meters up in the air, away from everything it an incredibly unique experience which can not be found elsewhere, Trial and Error will to be the decisive set, you can enjoy that part enough to love the game. Mirror's Edges battle system and the length is the few minuses in the game, which all in all is an excellent, brilliant and all the way of the most innovative games in a long time, it should be played by all
