As simple as the Mario kart franchise is, it's still pretty fun for everyone. Although as other racing games has surpass Mario kart, Not ignoring the fact that Super Mario kart back on the SNES introduced how great kart racer games should be or at least around that formula. Mario kart 8 continues and improves that formula of it's own genera along with the past great Mario kart games. Mario kart 8 introduces the gravity switch mechanic where you can wall drive or drive upside down, It's a pretty neat Idea but not very noticeable, when you drive over a gravity switch you feel like nothing has changed but the background flipping over or to the side.
However the flaws don't stop there, Mario kart 8 is lacking somewhat hard on content (nothing like Ultra smash) There is a Grand prix, time trial and online mode but what happened to the mission mode from Mario kart ds or the coin runners mode from Mario kart 7, It feels like a wasted opportunity for sure, it's understandable since Nintendo had other projects to work on during that time but it feels like you gave your fans an unfinished game, sadly that's not Mario kart 8's biggest problem. The battle mode in this game blows, the 3 balloon life mode is the only mode which there were multiple modes for battle mode, but the biggest problem is the track designs, the track designs are ripped right out of the tracks you play in Single player or Multiplayer mode and it's not designed well at all for battling opponents which is 100% completely unnecessary.
However Mario kart 8 content lacking and battle mode aside it's still not a bad game, it's a very clean, polished, and fun Mario kart experience that anyone can enjoy, Tracks are very well designed, the game looks gorgeous, and a very recommendable Mario kart game, but I recommend the switch version (Mario kart 8 deluxe) since it has a much better battle mode and an updated version of the Wii u.
