This is one of those games that haunts me from time to time - in a lost, dark spectral lover sort of way (omGoth!). Atmospheric as hell, this 4 Player co-op adventure is one of the most satisfyingly balanced games I ever played on a console. The similarities to Gauntlet are unmistakeable and, in a way, this could essentially be viewed as a parallel-dimension extension of that universe.

This is not a perfect game. There are some annoying issues like invisible walls limiting freedom-of-movement and some of the boss fights seem to have pretty excessive failure points (especially on single player, if I remember correctly). Overall though, this game strikes all of the chords of my favorite dark symphonies - grim heroic story-lines, exceptional art direction and superb sound design.

In fact, let's talk about the sound design for a moment. One of the ways that you can tell how well a team works together is when you're able to move seamlessly through a finished product like a game, movie or musical composition without realizing that multiple elements have influenced the journey - it just feels like it was borne from a single driven energy source. That's what we have here, from the opening titles to the visceral impact of how dual-wielded bullet patterns hit the decaying flesh of the hellish creatures trying to eat your soul; this thing is a ravishing melancholia throughout.

I love this game. When I sold my previous-Gen consoles and games in '08 (*sigh stupid RL financial issues...) I kept 2 games just to have them on my shelf, knowing that they would no longer be playable in their existing format: Wipeout from PSX, and Hunter: The Reckoning from the xbox.

I have yet to determine if this is available in XBLA but rest assured - I will seek out my dark angel tonight :)
