Man, I can't wait for 2015 to finally make good on the promise of "next-generation" games. This list is my picks for the best of 2014.. and year that, without the top 5 here, would have been a wildly disappointing slice of gaming history.

I don't like space flight sims as a rule and I've no affinity with the original Elite.. but this game got to me - it's amazing.. also the best reason to strap on an Oculus Rift DK2.
Not only the best South Park game, but probably the best RPG of 2014.
Damn this looks beautiful.. It's probably the last time I'm going to put up with the Ubisoft game template without protest, but it's a great game
The re-issue for PS4 makes it almost as good as a new game.
Brutal, epic awesome hack and slash. Also.. that nemesis system.
Almost nothing beats that feeling of playing with someone who's just realized that they shouldn't be chasing you... Also pulling the spine out of the character is just wonderful.
Awesome controls, perfect soundtrack - badass style.
Even though I have zero interest in playing this anymore, it made for a fantastic couple of gaming months early in the year.. Looking forward to Titanfall 2.. which hopefully features significant weapons customization, mech customization and keeps the same great level design and general approach in tact.
Awesome local multiplayer action - not quite Nidhogg, but really, really solid.
Despite its many flaws this had some great moments and the core is solid.
