In a world quite similar to our own except all horses throughout history were replaced with anthropomorphic horse-girls (don't think about the implications of this) one Trainer (you) take on the task of training one of these Uma Musume (literally "Horse Girls") (inspired by real-life racehorses in Japan) at Tracen Academy to rise to the top and become the best racehorse and pop idol (Umadol) that they can be.
Developed and produced by Cygames, released in 2021, Uma Musume is a mobile gacha game that was exclusive to the Japanese market until getting officially localized releases in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau (June 2022), Korea (June 2022), China (August 2023), and finally a global english version in June 2025. Gameplay consists of picking one UmaMusume with a deck of 'support' training cards, training them over the course of a set number of turns, encountering random events generated between the chosen cards, UmaMusume, and friendships with others, and then running them in races with increasingly bigger goals, fulfilling their career. It borrows similar 'roguelike' elements in that Veteran horses can be used to 'inspire' subsequent runs as trainers attempt to raise the strongest UmaMusume racers in the world.
The bulk of Uma Musume's gameplay is akin to training simulators before it. Trainers spend turns (treated as half months) training specific stats of a Uma Musume in order to prepare them for their assigned goals. These goals can vary from acquiring a certain number of fans, placing a specific position in a race, or simply just running in a specific race. If an Uma succeeds, then they proceed to the next goal until the end of their 3-year career. Along the way, set events will occur (provided by the scenario, support cards, or the Uma you are currently training) which may grant stats, skills, boosts, or hindrances during your run. In addition to these career goals, for any scenario, there is a separate goal/challenge available for the trainer to pass. These generally involves a set of races to compete in with higher difficulty. Success is optional here; but is preferred as it rewards bonus stats, skills, and prestige.
At the end of a career, a score is calculated based on a Uma's stats and skills, and they are then labeled as a 'veteran', allowing them to be selected to pass their 'sparks' and 'legacies' to future Uma Musume through the game's 'inheritance' system.
An Uma's performance can be influenced by the following stats they are trained in:
