Overview
Dutch van der Linde is a central character in the Red Dead (Franchise) series. He is the leader of the eponymous Van der Linde outlaw gang, and later heads up a Native American revolutionary gang. Dutch van der Linde is voiced by Benjamin Byron Davis (Person), who also provides motion capture for the character.
Background
Dutch van der Linde was born in 1855 to parents of mixed English and Dutch ancestry. His father was a soldier who died in Pennsylvania during the American Civil War and his mother was named Greta and died under mysterious circumstances. Dutch was the leader of his own gang, appropriately called Dutch's Gang, which consisted of Red Dead Redemption (Game) protagonist John Marston (Character), Bill Williamson (Character), and Javier Escuella (Character). Dutch slowly started going insane which lead to the downfall of his gang. When John Marston takes care of Bill Williamson and Javier Escuella, Agent Edgar Ross refuses to return him to his family even after he did what he was told. Instead, he orders Marston to take out Dutch, who has emerged from hiding. Marston, along with a posse of U.S. Marshals, assault the bank that he was seen in. Dutch is corner, but escapes after shooting an innocent woman in the head and running away. Eventually, however, they find his hideout and Marston assaults it with the aid of the U.S. Army. Dutch is once again cornered, this time on a cliff, but intentionally throws himself over the edge in an act of suicide.
Personality
By the events of Red Dead Redemption (Game), Dutch is equipped with a semi-automatic pistol and resides within a cave in the mountains of Cochinay in Tall Trees. When he is confronted by John Marston in Blackwater, Dutch uses a car to escape after robbing the town bank. His cave is stocked with a bookcase and typewriter, all of which suggest his hypocrisy against the use of modern technology.
Appearance
1899
Dutch has long black hair with a moustache and stubble. He commonly wears a black coat and vest over a white shirt and also usually dons a black fedora.
1907
By 1907, Dutch has long dark grey-colored hair and a thick full beard. He wears a black fur-lined overcoat and gloves.
1911
Dutch is shown to be considerably older, the temples of his hair are graying and his beard has since been shaved into a moustache. He wears a collarless orange shirt, brown pants and and dark boots. He also dons a necklace with a silver pendant.
