Rick Berman
Rick Berman was the executive producer of the Star Trek series from 1987-2005, an era that famously kept tight continuity between each program compared to the modern age.
Berman was highly supportive of Roddenberry's vison for creating the Next Generation. He worked closely with Dorothy Fontana (Person) to develop the pilot. After the first two seasons Roddenberry passed away and Berman began to be less strict with writers, but still always tried to keep Gene's mentality in mind. By the time Deep Space 9 (Location) was created, they had broken nearly every rule Roddenberry established by turning into it an episodic war drama, rather than self-contained episodes focused on exploration and preventing war. TNG characters Chief O'Brien and Worf (Character) carried on in DS9, Michael Dorn (Person) was featured prominently in later seasons as a fan favorite. Dorn was also the only actor of the Berman era to consistently appear in the film series concurrently with a starring role on the television programs. Voyager returned to this traditionalism somewhat, but characters continued to violate Roddenberry's behavioral standards. After the golden era of DS9/Voyager came to an end, Berman created a prequel series about the early days of the Federation, with Captain Archer and science officer T'Pol going back to basics as the leads. The show also put a spotlight on the Andorian race for the first time, with characters like Shran. Ratings continued to drop and the show was cancelled after four seasons, while all other Berman productions lasted for seven seasons. After this Berman entered retirement and the franchise disappeared in a five year hiatus.
