Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? is a sci-fi detective-themed edutainment adventure game developed and published by Brøderbund Software for Apple II, Commodore 64 (Platform), Amiga (Platform), Macintosh and DOS PCs in 1989-1990.
A spin-off of the 1985 game Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, Where in Time switches from world geography to world history with a new time travel theme.
Like the original, players have a limited amount of in-game time (which in this game is the usable hours of the Time Cadet's portable Chronoskimmer) to track down and apprehend each member of the Villains International League of Evil (V.I.L.E.), ending up with hunting down the titular Carmen Sandiego. Rather than simply tracking down the thief's location, however, players will have to navigate inter-connected parts of a "time stream", which include different countries at different periods in time. Aiding them is a real copy of The New American Desk Encyclopedia included with each copy of the game, which also served as physical copy protection.
The game also received console ports for the Nintendo Entertainment System (Platform) by Konami (Company) in 1991, the Sega Genesis by Electronic Arts in 1992, and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System by Hi Tech Expressions in 1993. It also received a remake in 1997, as well as a 1996-1997 American children's game show (a successor to the original game's show). It also received a regional sibling game, known as Where in America's Past is Carmen Sandiego?
