War: Final Assault is a sci-fi first-person/third-person shooter developed and released by both Atari and Midway for arcades on March 25, 1999.
Bringing the fast-paced, 3D-rendered style of first-person and third-person shooters of the era to arcades, War: Final Assault features multiplayer with up to four linked cabinets, including both campaign co-op ("Mission") and competitive free-for-all deathmatch ("Head-to-Head").
The game's campaign involves a team of commandos infiltrating the well-guarded fortress of General Yuri Alienov, the leader of the New Siberian Republic who has declared war on the world. As they venture deeper into the fortress, they eventually fight Nienov's mechanized forces and encounter the true nature of his army. The game features a fast-paced linear structure for its campaign, with both a lives system and replenishing countdown timer.
The arcade cabinet for the game uses a custom control panel that replicates the mouse-and-keyboard first-person shooters of the era, with the left raised section of the cabinet having buttons resembling arrow keys (for forward/backwards movement and strafing) and a button for jumping, and the right section of the cabinet with a custom joystick with both a trigger (for firing) and top-mounted button (for dropping the current weapon). It also features a dedicated button to switch between first-person and third-person views. Up to four cabinets can link-up, and players can track their persistent stats using player IDs.
A home release for the Nintendo 64 (Platform) and Sony PlayStation was planned, but was later cancelled.
There are four playable characters, each with their own unique starting weapon and stats (in both agility and durability).
Players can unlock alternate appearances for each character by playing with a high-ranked player ID and hitting the View button five times in the character selection screen. Most of them are enemies encountered throughout the game, but some are guest appearances from Mace: The Dark Age (Lord Deimos (Character) for St. Gunn, Taria de Castillo (Character) for Blondie, and The Executioner for Hawk).
There are eight total levels in Mission mode, the seventh of which require players to find a hidden Pentabolt Key in each of the first six levels.
