In Reus (Dutch for 'Giant') players control a a planet who has control over four Giants: Rock, Forest, Ocean, and Swamp. Each Giant has a set of abilities that can alter the planet in various ways. At the beginning of the game, the entire planet's surface is a wasteland. The goal is to use the Giant's powers to cultivate life and civilization. The Giants can transform the wasteland into other biomes (Ocean, Forest, Swamp, and Desert) and then use other abilities to place plants, animals and minerals in those biomes to attract humans who will create a village there. The villages will build projects--a Granary, for example--which the Giants can help the humans to achieve. Completing projects unlocks an ambassador from the settlement which can ride on a Giant's shoulder and confers further powers.
Reus has a concept called Developments which works as an internal achievement system and also offers potential direction to the player. For example, one of the Developments is "Forest Tribe" whose unlock condition is: "Finish an Era with a Forest Village which has 100 Village Prosperity." At the end of a game, the game provides a list of unlocked Developments which count towards increasing the player's level. Many, if not all, of the Developments are Steam Achievements as well.
Each Giant can create a specific kind of terrain as well as add animals, plants, or minerals to existing terrain. Some also have destructive powers which can destroy villages. They also have several Aspect powers which are generally modifiers to an animal, plant or mineral patch.
