Pitfall 3D: Beyond the Jungle, known in Europe as Pitfall: Beyond the Jungle and in Japan simply as Pitfall 3D, is a 3D action-adventure game developed by Activision (Company) (along with Luxoflux) and published by Activision for the Sony PlayStation on February 28, 1998. The first 3D entry in the Pitfall (Franchise) series of adventure-themed platformers, Pitfall 3D puts players in the role of Pitfall Harry Jr. (voiced by Bruce Campbell (Person)), son of the original Pitfall Harry (Character) and the protagonist of Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, as he is transported into the realm of the collapsing Moku civilization and must restore its capital of Shenrak before taking on the forces of a malevolent tyrant known as "The Scourge". While it reworks the series into a new overhead 3D perspective, the game still features numerous references to the original 1982 game Pitfall!, including the ability to swinging along vines. Like Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, the game includes a playable version of the the original 1982 Atari 2600 game Pitfall! as a hidden unlockable. The game also features a demo of Luxoflux's earlier game Vigilante 8 (Game), and Activision later followed up the concept of a 3D Pitfall game six years later with Pitfall: The Lost Expedition. The game also received a handheld Game Boy Color (Platform) adaptation in 1999 as Pitfall: Beyond the Jungle (or, in Japan, Pitfall GB). Developed by David A. Palmer Productions and published by Crave Entertainment (Company) (in North America), Interplay (in Europe), and Pony Canyon (in Japan), this version reworks the PS1 version as a 2D side-scrolling platformer with minimal story.
