Overview

Nekopara Vol.1 is a visual novel developed by NEKO WORKs (Company), a development circle that has since overseen the long-running Nekopara (Franchise) series. NEKO WORKs was founded by Sayori, a Chinese illustrator who was well-known at the time for her work on other visual novels, as well as for illustrations of Chocola (Character) and Vanilla, two catgirl characters who would become central to the Nekopara series. Before it was released in Japan, Nekopara Vol. 1 was licensed for translation into English by publisher Sekai Project (Company). This made it a notable early example of an independent Japanese visual novel being released in Japanese and English on the same day. This release was aided by Nekopara being successfully approved for a Steam release via Steam Greenlight (Concept). Nekopara Vol. 1's Steam release is a modified all-ages version removing the game's sex scenes. The original Japanese release and non-Steam English releases retain these scenes, albeit with mosaic censoring due to Japanese laws. In 2018, a paid DLC was released for the Steam version which adds back scenes present in other versions.

Story

The game is set in a world where cats have been genetically engineered into catgirls, and become common pets. The story follows the main character Kashou Minaduki as he opens a patisserie on his own only to be followed by two of his family's catgirls, Chocola and Vanilla. From there, the game follows daily life around the patisserie and the evolving relationship of the three.

Gameplay

Nekopara Vol.1 follows a standard kinetic visual novel setup, in that the only player interaction is progressing through a linear, pre-determined story line. Dialogue can be set to automatically advance at the end of a spoken line or advanced at the player's discretion. All characters are fully voiced except for the main character.
