Cave Noire is a fantasy-themed turn-based action RPG developed and published by Konami (Company) for the Game Boy (Platform) exclusively in Japan on April 19, 1991.
Noted for being one of the earliest traditional roguelikes released on a non-computer platform, Cave Noire has players partaking in quests exploring procedurally-generated dungeons, where each death causes the dungeon to regenerate and all equipment and stats to reset. As they complete quests and escape the dungeon, they can start a new expedition with more difficult quests against stronger foes.
As with traditional roguelikes, the game is presented in a grid-based format, where everything (the player, enemies, objects, and environmental hazards) takes up a tile in the 8×6 room. The game's action, including monster movement, only occurs if the player is making an action (such as movement, attacking, or intentionally pausing).
