Retroachievements is a community-created service which adds achievements and online leaderboards for "retro" video games, via emulation.

Overview
Founded in 2012, Retroachievements (stylized as RetroAchievements) is a combination site and emulation plug-in which keeps track of a player's progress in games. The primary purpose of this is for unlocking achievements, designed by members of the RetroAchievements community, for pre-existing games. In addition to this, some games will offer leaderboards for in-game actions, such as time taken to beat a given level or least number of deaths in a playthrough.
Since launch, the site has expanded to support a variety of emulated consoles, including more recent consoles such as the Nintendo Gamecube and PlayStation Portable (Platform). Although primarily focused on emulation, the site does have some limited support for standalone PC titles such as Final Fantasy XI and Terraria (Game).
Trivia
- The first console supported was the Sega Genesis. The first achievement set released was for Sonic the Hedgehog (Game), on Nov. 2, 2012.
- Despite Sonic the Hedgehog being the site's first achievement set, it's only the site's fourth-most played game, behind Super Mario World (Game), Super Mario Bros., and Donkey Kong Country (Game).
