Batman takes on a group of thugs.

Batman: Dark Tomorrow is a 3D superhero action-adventure game developed and published by Kemco (Company) (with HotGen Studios handling the Xbox port) for the GameCube (Platform) and Xbox (Platform) in North America and Japan on March 18, 2003, and in Europe on April 11, 2003. A PlayStation 2 (Platform) version was in development, but was canceled prior to release.

Unlike most prior games in the Batman (Franchise) superhero franchise, which were based solely on its adaptations in movies and animated TV shows, Dark Tomorrow is based on the franchise's source material (the various comic book series, specifically those in the "Modern Age" of comic books) and features a CGI art style. The game's plot was written by former DC Comics writer Scott Peterson (Person), with assistance from famed Final Fantasy (Franchise) writer Kenji Terada (Person), and its orchestral music was performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

As the titular caped crusader, players must break up a turf war between the criminals Scarface (with The Ventriloquist) and Black Mask (Character), only to rescue Commissioner James Gordon (Character) from the overrun Arkham Asylum (Location) (forcing him to fight The Ratcatcher, Killer Croc (Character), Poison Ivy (Character), Mr. Freeze, Mr. Zsasz, and The Joker (Character)). Meanwhile, behind the scenes, a mysterious foe is planning world domination.

The game was notable for including a limited-edition Batman comic book inside each copy.

Gameplay

The gameplay is a cross between third-person, first-person, and fixed camera angle (much like Resident Evil (Game)). Despite being a stealthy Dark Knight who relies on his shadow and sneaky approach, the game encourages the player to run towards the enemies and battle them without any tactics whatsoever. Every time Batman defeats an enemy, he has to handcuff each thug or they will wake up and continue fighting. There are also hidden documents and discs scattered throughout the game that consist of extra intel and unlockable items.

Batgear

Batman has a wide arsenal of tools to aid him, several of which are more utility-focused (with infinite amount of uses):

  • Batcuffs - Restrains downed enemies, preventing them from getting back up. While he has an infinite amount of them, he is vulnerable while performing the cuff. These can also be used on its own dedicated shortcut button (R).
  • Fingerlight - A small flashlight to illuminate dark places with.
  • Nightvision - Allows him to see in poorly lit or cramped areas in first-person. It's also useful to reveal hidden laser alarm systems and other traps.
  • Universal Tool - A special multi-purpose electronics/lockpicking device that is used to open certain locked doors and access certain computer consoles.
  • Batgrapple - Fires a grappling hook that allows him to climb up to higher areas.
  • Batcable - Allows him to throw a cable-wrapped batarang, which he can use to swing across areas.

In addition, Batman has more mainline limited-use gear for offensive and defensive purposes. Throughout the game, players can change his gear deployment with three choices: Offensive (which doubles his Batarangs), Defensive (which doubles his Medical Kit), and Stealth (which doubles his Smoke Capsules).

  • Batarang (Object) - His sole ranged weapon, which knocks most enemies down in a single hit, disable certain devices remotely (such as switches and security cameras), and trigger explosive barrels. While he throws them directly while in combat, he can also aim them in a first-person perspective. He carries 10 batarangs by default.
  • Smoke Capsule - Capsules that can be thrown, which release a cloud of diluted nerve gas to obscure vision, create a distraction, or knock enemies down He carries 5 capsules by default.
  • Medical Kit - Used for healing himself of all wounds. He carries 200 charges by default.
