The Damned
Souls of various individuals from history and mythology consigned to Hell in Dante's Inferno. Many of them can be absolved by Dante and thus allowed to leave Hell and ascend to Heaven.

There are 27 Damned Souls in all who are found by Dante as he traverses the Inferno. As a rule, each of the nine circles of Hell has three souls that can be absolved or punished, except for Gluttony, which has only two, and Violence, which has four. The souls are, in order:

Each has, by the time they're found, been reduced to a broken wreck, voicing aloud moments of significance from their lives as they seem lost in their memories. Their physical features have mostly been erased, and they all appear as shriveled, naked, skeletal figures. Choosing to Absolve them allows their souls to ascend to Heaven, while choosing to Punish them will have Dante stab them with his scythe, disintegrating them.
