Product Placement
CONCEPT
Product placement is the act of using branded products in high visibility settings inside movies and games in exchange for special consideration, financial purchases or otherwise. In recent years, it has become more apparent.

The iPod from Metal Gear Solid 4.

Product placement is a form of advertising that has been used in movies for several years, but is beginning to show its grim face in the game industry, as well. Real world objects are incorporated into the game worlds. These can range from subtle placement such as the Fender Stratocaster guitar controller from Rock Band (Game), to "in your face" advertisements, like the Sony Ericsson mobile phone and the Apple iPod in Metal Gear Solid 4. The Xbox 360 version of Need for Speed: ProStreet used product placement for the achievement icons.

Some games are made for the sole purpose of having the advertiser's products placed within them. Pepsiman (Game), Global Gladiators (Game) and Yaris (Game) are prime examples of this. Presidential candidate Barack Obama has also started putting campaign ads on billboards in Burnout: Paradise. Homefront (Game) has taken product placement to the extremes; in order to give a daunting "War in your back yard" feel the game has numerous real-life brands spread throughout the game, ranging from Home Depots to Pepsi factories.
