The System 246 (commonly known as the Namco System 246, sometimes known as System 2x6) is an arcade system board by Namco (Company) that is based on Sony's PlayStation 2 (Platform) hardware and was used in a variety of first-party and third-party arcade games from 2000 to 2011. It is a successor to the System 11 series (which were based on the original PlayStation (Platform) hardware). Along with traditional arcade controls (commonly used for fighting games, such as Tekken 4 (Game) and Soulcalibur II (Game)), the hardware supports interfaces for driving controls (Ridge Racer V (Game), Battle Gear 3 (Game), Wangan Midnight), light-gun controls (Time Crisis 3 (Game), Vampire Night (Game), Cobra: The Arcade), touchscreen controls (Druaga Online: The Story of Aon, Dragon Chronicle Online, The iDOLM@STER), and analog drum controls (for the 7th to 14th entries of Taiko no Tatsujin (Franchise)). Other interfaces supported include IC Card readers, gamepad ports for PS2 controllers, and networked LAN multiplayer (with some games supporting satellite setups). Games were released in either CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, or attached Hard Drive formats. The systems have received multiple revisions, with some notable ones:
- The more-powerful System 256. Supports backwards-compatibility with some System 246 games. A unique version is used for Time Crisis 4 (Game).
- The System 147, a cost-reduced version with the game itself directly on the board on a ROM chip. The only game released in this format was Pac-Man Battle Royale.
