An endurance race a long race around either a track or a long stretch of road. To qualify as an endurance race, the total length of time spent racing has to be at least six hours and the longer endurance races can reach up to 24 hours in length with the most famous of these being the 24 hours of Le Mans. The endurance race itself is meant to test the endurance of the driver and the durability of his equipment. Most endurance races will give the drivers at least on break to rest. Examples of endurance racing in video games would be the 24 Hour Le Mans in GRID or the Baja 1000 featured in THQ's Baja game.
Facts
* The first endurance race ever was held at a closed track called Brooklands in 1907. This race became known as the Double Twelve because the event was made up of two 12 hour race events over the course of two days.
- The Triple Crown of endurance racing is made up of the three most challeging endurance races in the world, Twelve Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours of Daytona, and 24 Hours of Le Mans used to make up this Triple Crown.
- Driver Ken Miles is the only person to ever come close to winning all of the events in the Triple Crown in one racing season, but due to an error at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, he placed second.
- The last car to ever win all thre events of the Triple Crown was the Porsche 962 in 1986, but in 2003 the 24 Hours of Daytona had its regulations changed and it is now impossible to win all three events with the same car.
- Since the 24 Hours of Daytona changed its regulations, the Petite Le Mans, a 10 hour race held at Road Atlanta has replaced it in the Triple Crown so that all three races can run on the same regulations.
- Motorcycle racing also has several endurance races associated with it like the 8 Hours of Suzuka and the 24 Hours of Liege.
