Thoughts: Bad Company 2 demo

After playing the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 demo on the PS3 for a few hours and on the 360 for an hour, I can certainly say I'm impressed.  The shooting mechanic feels a little better than most Battlefield games (on par with the first Bad Company), but not quite as good as Modern Warfare 2.  When using the assault rifles and SMGs (my go-to weapons), it's incredible how much more effective burst-firing your weapons is than spraying.  In a lot of multiplayer games you can get away with spraying at an enemy, even from a distance, but burst-fire is the way to go in BC2.  The vehicle controls and physics are great, and I'm loving how the quick and agile ATV allows for great opportunities to flank the enemies.  I still feel like the aircraft controls are overly complicated.

The class-based unlocking system works well in the demo.  It kept me coming back for more and encouraged me to use all of the available classes to unlock every weapon and gadget.  I also found the medic class to be extremely rewarding, even more than in Killzone 2.  It was nice to not have to stand on a fallen ally to revive him, as it allows you to stand a couple feet away.

I liked the squad mechanic, allowing me to respawn on a squad member that was still alive.  This feature should be used in other similar games going forward.  I didn't like how the change kit button (circle or B, depending on the console) was the same as the arm/disarm button.  I was often frantically trying to arm the bomb before someone killed me or trying to disarm the bomb before it went off and I'd switch to the kits of someone who died there moments earlier instead of arming/disarming.  I'll have to check out the controls and see if I can change that.

I'm really looking forward to playing the retail build when it hits on March 2nd.  It might replace Modern Warfare 2 for a little while.
