Quick Fix: Gently Used

They were used games, and I realize that some people have trouble with those.  I don't think, beyond buying a Wii that'll emulate it or more surreptitious means, I would have been able to play these games.  I guess living in an area where things weren't readily available if they weren't new has sort of colored my opinion on used games, since I'd rather have them available than miss out just because they didn't get first run sales.

If given the choice between new and used, as long as the price wasn't too great, I'd probably go new just to make sure the software was intact.  But if the choice between playing and not, I don't think of it as stealing from the designers, since they already got compensated through the initial purchase.

I guess I could be more patient and wait for games to surface again in other forms.  That could be a sensible purchasing ethic in many different ways, too.  But when presented with the choice of purchasing a copy or letting it go, to me it wasn't a huge issue.  I wanted to play these things, the people who had them were compensated for ensuring they worked and were cared for, and now I'll get to experience them.

I'm glad books don't get this kind of scrutiny, since used book stores are some of my favorite places to shop.  Still, there are programs in some countries to try to compensate writers.  The Dutch library system actually pays authors for the right to store their books in libraries, which from a creator's perspective is phenomenal.  I wonder if those who made stuff that's now on Wii virtual console are compensated as such.

Any used games you were especially proud to get?
