My Non-Gaming Day

So, I downloaded Starfarers, which is this RTS-style spaceship sim similar to Homeworld only top-down instead of 3D, and probably plenty of other differences I'm not really sure of since I was intending to check when I started the game.  I must have misread the blog because I thought it was an alpha demo. Maybe it still is, but I get the feeling a more active version of kickstarting. I dunno, you can decide, given my subsequent discouragements I'm not too keen on bothering.

I also grabbed the demo for Avadon, Spiderweb Software's new party-based RPG setting, after reading Egge's preview and watching the opening video. Seems, though, that this old PC is a bit too old to even unpack the thing. I assume it was trying to do a software call for a process that this thing can't manage, but at least I learned this before I unpacked the thing.

GOG today, in addition to some site upgrades, released a Microprose point-and-click adventure game, for free, called Dragonsphere. I downloaded the thing and almost got it to work, but I think they used a call that I've seen them use for other adventure games. I think it busts the resolution limits for this cheap, ultra-crappy monitor I got to replace the really nice one that died too early. Not the first time this sort of problem has happened, clearly, but given that this game is quite old it was a bit depressing.  At least I got to point and click a bit before it crashed my computer and forced a reset.

Finally, I hooked up Inner Worlds to DOSBox, configured it, and got the opening screen before it froze on what would have been the gameplay screen. Pretty sure it had to do with how the sound card setup was configured, but I'm not sure. I've seen others play it without any trouble, so again--

--Maybe I should just get a new computer and get it over with.

In the meantime, I'll try out The Wager. It HAS to work!

...

And it did  work. And it was fun and funny. Glad Rock, Paper, Shotgun discovered it so I could.

Also, I just realized I did play Doom 1 earlier today, beating the second episode. So much for game purity!
