Heavy Rain2010

4 out of 5 stars

Developer Quantic Dream has a history of unique, but ultimately flawed, games. Omikron: The Nomad Soul was just too weird for most people, though it featured an excellent sci-fi storyline. 2005's Indigo Prophecy (also known as Fahrenheit) innovated greatly in the realm of cinematic experiences in games, but the plot took a turn for the batshit crazy at the end, and turned off many people. With Heavy Rain, Quantic…

The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom2010

5 out of 5 stars

The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom has inevitably drawn comparisons to Braid, the indie darling otherwise known as Pretentious Metaphor-Fest. This isn't necessarily an unfair point, as both games feature mind-destroying out of the ordinary puzzles. P.B. Winterbottom is the story of the titular character, a dapper gentleman in a bowler and monocle. He is a pie thief by trade who, while chasing a giant monster…

Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time2009

5 out of 5 stars

The Ratchet & Clank series has long been a model of excellent action-platforming. With the exception of the lackluster Ratchet: Deadlocked, all the Ratchet games have featured a perfect mix of exploration and intense action sequences, capped off with great characters and hilarious dialogue. The follow-up to 2007's Tools of Destruction (and the downloadable episode Quest for Booty), a Crack in Time opens with Ratchet…

Dark Sector2008

4 out of 5 stars

Dark Sector's biggest claim to fame is probably its troubled development past. Announced way back in 2000, the game went through several major overhauls in gameplay and story before finally being released in 2008. The games story is definitely its weakest point. It opens with your character, Hayden Tenno (who is at least voiced nicely by Michael Rosenbaum) infiltrating some sort of prison, for reasons never really…

Resident Evil 52009

5 out of 5 stars

First things first: if you played the demo for Resident Evil 5, don't trust it. That small part of the game is maybe the worst representative slice a game developer has ever seen fit to show. The demo made the game seem like nothing but a confined, slow shooter that was woefully behind the times. The truth is that Resident Evil 5 is just as great as RE4 was, if not nearly as revolutionary. The story picks up the…

Flower2009

5 out of 5 stars

Lots of people will try to tell you that Flower is not a videogame, and that it is actually some sort of interactive art. Don't listen to these people, as they are wrong. As beautiful and awe-inspiring as Flower is, it does have some very clear goals and objectives. The core of the game revolves around controlling the wind using Sixaxis controls to steer your flower petals around a vast environment, collecting more…

Condemned: Criminal Origins2005

5 out of 5 stars

Let's face it: the majority of 360 launch titles sucked. Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero weren't exactly shining examples of the technology. Out of all the titles available at launch, Condemned stands out as the best, and it may even be one of the best horror games. You take the role of Ethan Thomas, a cop investigating a series of serial murders. when he is suddenly framed for the murder of 2 police officers. You spend…

Braid2008

4 out of 5 stars

Ah, Braid. The go-to example in pretentious "Are games art?" conversations. I'm not going to get into that argument in-depth here, but suffice it to say, Braid is quite the artsy game. Though I could do without the ridiculous metaphorical storyline (don't get me started on the epilogue), the game's art style is amazing. It gives off a sort of hand-painted, watercolor vibe that's simply gorgeous. Though the…

Burnout Paradise2008

5 out of 5 stars

Burnout 3: Takedown was without a doubt the previous peak of the Burnout series. Burnout Paradise blows it out of the water. Completely abandoning the setup of the previous game's races, Paradise features a totally open world in which you simply pull up to intersections to begin races. The game's core mechanics remain, and the arcadey feel of the driving is fully intact. Though the main complaint lodged against the…

Pokémon Red/Blue1996

4 out of 5 stars

Reviewer's Note: Although Red & Blue are technically separate games, due to their minor differences, they will be reviewed as a single package. This is it. The original. The granddaddy of the media cash-cow franchise that Nintendo still relies on to make some serious dough. Though I kind of fell out of the loop after the Gold/Silver era, it's my understanding that the series hasn't changed much. But if that means…

Elite Beat Agents2006

5 out of 5 stars

Sometimes, a game comes along that is fun to play, and has a lot of replay value, but you just can't believe the premise. Elite Beat Agents is that game. Based on the Japanese series Ouendan, EBA puts you in the shoes of one of the Elite Beat Agents, basically an elite force that helps fix people's problems through... wait for it... DANCING! Yeah, okay, it's pretty weird, but that's definitely a part of this game's…

Advance Wars2001

5 out of 5 stars

I actually received Advance Wars by chance on one Christmas. My aunt and uncle have a tendency of buying me random GBA games without knowing what they are, and I recieved this with less than enthusiastic response. I mean, really, how good can a GBA strategy game really be? The answer: really, really good. Advance Wars takes place in a world called Cosmo Land, and follows the story of 3 COs (basically generals) in…

Animal Crossing2001

3 out of 5 stars

Animal Crossing was one of the first games I bought for the Gamecube. With its premise of "The Sims... but with cute animals!", I was highly susceptible to its charms at the tender age of 11. Oh, how naive I was. The game holds up well for a month or two, but once you realize that there's not much substance underneath it all, it quickly loses its charm. The premise of the very minimal story is that you, a human…

All-Pro Football 2K82007

4 out of 5 stars

Back in 1999, Sega released the Sega Dreamcast, a quality system which eventually ended in failure. At the Dreamcast's launch, EA Sports declined to release the Madden franchise on the console, prompting Sega to find another football franchise to fill this gap. NFL 2K was the football series to take Madens place, and it performed excellently. The series continued in yearly installments, eventually gaining an ESPN…
