Tunic2022

4.5 out of 5 stars

Brilliant sense of discovery. Filling out the manual as you go is a great mechanic. Loses a half-star for frustrating/underwhelming combat and some eyebrow-raising late-game puzzles. Watched someone meticulously translate the in-game language during their playthrough and may never been as impressed.

Slay the Spire2017

5 out of 5 stars

The king of deckbuilding roguelikes! The tabletop version is amazing as well, maybe surpasses the original for me just for tactile enjoyment. Getting a great card in your deck in the videogame is satisfying, but not as much as actually holding the actual card in your hand (and then never drawing it when you actually need it!)

Half-Life 22004

5 out of 5 stars

Still the best FPS campaign (sorry I haven't played Titanfall 2 yet). Like the combination of shooting with the physics puzzles. Last time I played it, the music and pace honestly stressed me out a little too much, but that might have just been the mental space I was in at the time.

Mario Kart Wii2008

4.5 out of 5 stars

My personal favorite Mario Kart game. Not a fan of the modern boost mechanic so enjoy racing with the bikes which have a more traditional playstyle (more about "racing lines" than "snaking" with boosts). Me and my roommate got really competitive with this one, great times!

Mario Kart: Super Circuit2001

4.5 out of 5 stars

Underrated Mario Kart. Not sure why it gets the hate it does. Feels like an expansion/sequel for the original Super Mario Kart, so if you like that one you'll mostly likely like this one! Improves on the original formula by having coins pickups that increase speed, making the game slightly more technical.

EarthBound1994

5 out of 5 stars

The only JRPG I've ever beaten (besides Pokemon, if that counts). Loved the irreverent sense of humor and tension that comes with the healing mechanic. A funhouse mirror version of America seen through a Japanese lens. Some pain points exist if you are not following along with the AMAZING manual/tourism guidebook, but the game seems designed with the manual in mind.

LEGO Racers1999

4.5 out of 5 stars

Underrated kart racer. Cool weapon system (similar to Crash Team Racing) that the game sadly teaches you is broken in the final boss race. That menu music is forever burned into my neurons. The enemy racer AI is apparently harder on N64 than PC??

Worms Armageddon1999

Gaming group got back into this during the pandemic. No game can make me as angry as this game... and I love it!

Cave Story2004

5 out of 5 stars

Another GOAT soundtrack (I recommend the Wii soundtrack version). More people need to go back to this one. Completing the Last Cave without the jet boost upgrade is one of the most satisfying gaming experiences of my life.

Undertale2015

Great characters, great gameplay, GOAT soundtrack! Still need to go back and finish the final boss of genocide run.

Fallout 42015

3.5 out of 5 stars

Mile wide but an inch deep. Shooting is good (enjoy the random attributes on drops, got some OP weapons in endgame) but story is meh. Was not taken with the building mechanics. Loved SOME companion quests but many other characters annoyed me.

Fallout: New Vegas2010

5 out of 5 stars

Main story "murder" mystery drives forward quest in a satisfying way. Great vibes and music. Held back by rough edges and SOME cringe-y sidequest writing but overall world and mechanics shine through to make it the best Fallout game.

The Witness2016

Great game! Captures the spirit of Myst in a way no other modern game has for me. Wish the creator wasn't such a knob :\

Super Mario 641996

5 out of 5 stars

Favorite 3d Mario (and probably overall favorite Mario title). Love the format of this one and sad that the series moved away from the 5+ stars with hints. Controls have some frustrating issues (turning on a dime/getting out of water ARRGGGHH!) but the brilliant level design overcomes any shortcomings. Nostalgia wraps me in a warm blanket when I sit down to play this :)

Super Smash Bros.1999

5 out of 5 stars

Personal favorite of the Smash Bros games. Simplicity + original physics keeps my group coming back to this. Ultimate almost dethroned it but was too much for the oldheads in my game group.
