After playing it for about 12 or so hours. I've come to the realization
that FC2 is very similar to GTA 3 you do errands that are not very
different from each other, and you buy guns, you unlock them, you kill
EVERYONE that looks at you wrong (aka, anyone that stands in your way
while driving). You drive like a maniac. It's all very fun. But it
seems rather shallow.
It's not really fair to compare these two games, but I think the spirit
of GTA 3 (Yes GTA 3) lives in Far Cry 2. Of course FC2, has made a
bunch of great innovations, like NEVER taking you out of the first
person view. Things like getting diamonds was a fun scavenger's hunt
that at the same time gave you the means of buying more guns. The whole
"healing" mechanic, where you pull bullets, straighten your broken
bones, and the whole malaria deal.
While the game looks good at times, there are times where it seems
like, even though it's getting slower frames per second, it manages to
look crappy. Like at night, why? It seems to me like in daylight the
game becomes more demanding, graphically. So why doesn't it "chug" in
the day? It's a mystery. And that takes me to the bugs, I encountered a
couple, one where as soon as a level loaded it would close the game. No
error messages, just closed in a millisecond. The other was that I got
HORRIBLE fps when in High settings, then I went to Medium, same, then
to low (I didn't spend all this money on my PC to play on low!!) ONLY
then it would get a steady 30+fps.
I tried once more to go ULTRA HIGH expect I restarted the game. And what do you know, it works like it's supposed to.
So far the story seems very crappy, voicework is great, but heh, it has
nothing to attach to. FC2 has managed to do some innovative things, but
at the same time it has lagged in others. It's hard to recommend, but if you're one that doesn't care about story, but likes shooting dudes and driving, this is for you.
