Games Played in 2020

by d_w

For the last couple of years I've been documenting every time I play a game and what I thought about it during that session. You can see all the previous lists here.

A session can be anywhere from a few minutes to many hours. Sessions that last longer than one block of time (illustrated below) are counted for each block individually. Sessions that cross over a block (like from 2:30 to 4) count towards the one that more time was spent in.

This will be unedited and likely full of typos and misspellings. The descriptions of my sessions may include story spoilers. Any spoilers will NOT be marked.

Here's the break down of the time of day:

TimeTermTimeTerm
12am to 3am Midnight Noon to 3pm Afternoon
3am to 6am Early Morning 3pm to 6pm Early Evening
6am to 9am Morning 6pm to 9pm Evening
9am to Noon Late Morning 9pm to 12am Late Evening

Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium

Played: 1/1. Evening. PC Steam. Enjoyed. Continuing the playthrough with my partner from last year. We near the end of the Day 2. This game is extremely good! ~~~ Played: 1/2. Evening. We started Day 3. ~~~ Played: 1/5. Late Evening. We met the cryptozoologist. It's great!!! ~~~ Played: 1/8. Evening. We met the speed punks who want to set up a speed lab in the church, and found a dead body. ~~~ Played: 1/14. Evening. ~~~ Played: 1/14. Late Evening. We did a lot! Finished up most of the stuff at the church, did most of the cryptozoologist stuff, then actually got the body down. We are savescumming a bit and it does seem like that game always gives you a success if you savescum. We did not take the boots. This game also really starts throwing level ups at you. ~~~ Played: 1/15. Evening. ~~~ Played: 1/15. Late Evening. Started Day 4. Found the pinball secret. ~~~ Played: 1/16. Late Evening. There was a loud sound. It turned out ok... ~~~ Played: 1/21. Late Evening. Hot on the trail of Ruby. Probably should have had been doing this earlier. Whoops. ~~~ Played: 1/22. Late Evening. We found Ruby. She got away. I think it was the head scab who shot him. ~~ Played: 1/25. Evening. We survived the shoot out. Now on the island. ~~~ Finished: 1/28. Late Evening. We finished the game! What a fun little reveal at the end. I do wonder how else it could go. We did think it was odd that it had a very jarring cut to credits. Kinda wish it was like a slow pan out and fade to black or something. No epilogue either. Still absolutely fantastic! ~~~ Started: 12/3. Evening. We decided to play it again. We picked Electrochemistry as our skill and are probably going to go for SUPERSTAR cop. also hobocop. ~~~ Played: 12/6. Early Evening. ~~~ Played: 12/6. Evening. We failed to get the body down. ~~~ Played: 12/11. Evening. ~~~ Played: 12/11. Late Evening. We snuck into the harbor. Talked to Ervart. Got Measurehead to get the body down. Give the "LOVE TRUTH" to Garte. Open the trash can. And Got in touch with our clipboard. We are now a hobocop and a superstar cop. Thank you. ~~~ Played: 12/16. Evening. We put the body in the bear fridge. We're gonna steal those boots. We also smashed down the door to the doomed commercial area. ~~~ Played: 12/19. Late Evening. ~~~ Played: 12/26. Evening. ~~~ Played: 12/26. Late Evening. We finished up Day 1 and totally stole the boots. ~~~

~~~~~~ Zordak ~~~~~~ Started: 1/2. Early Evening. PC Itch. Enjoyed. This is a still-in-development Metroidvania. So far it's pretty snazzy. I don't want to play too much since it's not finished and I don't know how much is there, but it's pretty good so far. a little rough around the edges, but I think I can forgive that! ~~~ Played: 1/2. Early Evening. I didn't realize but I actually got to the end of the demo before. I just spent time running around looking for where to go and walked back into the boss room and noticed the "That's all of the demo!" message. Ah well. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Little Comet ~~~~~~ Played: 6/14. Midnight. PC Itch. Mixed. I was hoping this game would be more like the flash game Gravity Golf, but that's not really the case. It is EXTREMELY cute, but unfortunately not very fun. It's a little too focused on getting the specific goals. I may look up to see if Gravity Golf is still playable anywhere though... (I looked it up, the game I was actually thinking of was called "Gravitee".) ~~~ ~~~~~~ Gravitee ~~~~~~ Played: 6/14. Midnight. PC Web. Enjoyed. I had to see if this game is still playable and it is and it's good. I also looked to see if there's any speed runs and there are and that fact is absurd. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Shn!p ~~~~~~ Played: 6/14. Midnight. PC Itch. Neutral. This seems like an alright puzzle game. I don't know, maybe I just wasn't in the right mindset for it. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Adjacency ~~~~~~ Played: 6/14. Afternoon. PC Itch. Negative. This is a fiddly puzzle game about getting colors into specific shapes without overriding other colors. It was required too much clicking and not enough logic. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Cascadio ~~~~~~ Played: 6/14. Afternoon. PC Itch. Enjoyed. This game reminds me of another I got through the itch BLM bundle. It does require some math and is very obviously meant to be a mobile game, but it core puzzle idea is pretty good once I figured it out. I might play more of this. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Garden Match ~~~~~~ Played: 6/14. Afternoon. PC Itch. Mixed. This is a match 3 game. The movement feels awkward and the tiles aren't distinct enough from each other. The presentation is real nice and the endless mode was pretty alright for what it is. The puzzle mode seemed impossible though. I couldn't beat the first level. ~~~ ~~~~~~ No More Kings ~~~~~~ Played: 6/14. Evening. PC Itch. Neutral. This is a puzzle game based off chess movements which I just don't have a good base for. It got a bit too tricky for me too quickly and I don't like that it has a grading system. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Theorem ~~~~~~ Played: 6/14. Evening. PC Itch. Negative. Not my kind of puzzle game. The goal of "figure out how to get the cube in this orientation at this point" is just sort of frustrating rather than interesting. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Breaker ~~~~~~ Played: 6/14. Evening. PC Itch. Neutral. I could not wrap my head around the controls. Its just right and left, but it didn't feel right. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Flowerdrops ~~~~~~ Played: 6/16. Late Evening. PC Itch. Enjoyed. This is an incredibly simple puzzle game about bouncing water on to flowers. It's actually a lot like Gravitee in a weird way. I really liked it. ~~~ Played: 6/20. Early Evening. I unlocked all the levels that I have access to. I wonder if I need to get perfect scores on all the levels to unlock more. I don't think I would do that. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Knights of the Card Table ~~~~~~ Played: 6/20. Afternoon. PC Itch. Neutral. This game is mechanically interesting, but I don't really like the irreverence. I find that sort of stuff so insufferable. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Cuckoo Castle ~~~~~~ Played: 6/20. Early Evening. PC Itch. Mixed. This game wasn't very well programmed. The gamepad doesn't quite work right and the music doesn't play after a bit. Too unpolished to really play at the moment. It was a game jam game though. Nice art too. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Nine Nines ~~~~~~ Played: 6/22. Early Evening. PC Itch. Mixed. This is an in development tower defense. It's a little boring and directionless at the moment. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Gumgem ~~~~~~ Played: 6/22. Early Evening. PC Itch. Mixed. This is another sort of twitchy platformer that I just can't play. I couldn't even do the last area of the training. Though the controls were not really layout how I would have had them. ~~~ ~~~~~~ Chaos Galaxy ~~~~~~ Played: 11/7. Late Morning. PC Steam. Neutral. I didn't play too much of this because the tutorialization wasn't great and I think I messed up a main quest for the faction I choose. I was supposed to go fight the robot AI, but since a large faction was like "hey be our vassals" and I agreed, that made it so I couldn't fight the robots. I'll probably restart and see what I could do. I might switch it to beginner too. ~~~
Noita
Noita
Played: 1/3. Evening. PC Itch. Enjoyed. Discovered that water purifies toxic sludge! ~~~ Played: 1/27. Midnight. ~~~ Played: 5/16. Evening. ~~~ Played: 5/16. Late Evening. ~~~ Played: 5/17. Late Evening. Turns out vampirism + plus more blood + blood cloud is pretty good. Shame I died because I ran out of jump. ~~~ Played: 5/22. Late Evening. ~~~ Played: 5/25. Midnight. ~~~ Played: 5/25. Afternoon. I actually had a decent run to the jungle area, but could not deal enough damage and got messed up by a wand I picked up exploding in my face. ~~~ Played: 5/25. Afternoon. Tried again.Died to silly mistakes. But I think I have a good strat of exploring a lot of the first area first before moving on. ~~~ Played: 5/25. Afternoon. I really wish I could figure out a way to not just die a lot. ~~~ Played: 5/25. Early Evening. Ok! So the unlimited spell perk is extremely good. ~~~
Outbuddies
Outbuddies
Started: 1/4. Early Evening. PC Steam. Mixed. This game has a lot of really weird controls that I don't think I'd like were I to play more of it. The wall jumping and shooting feel bad. The telekensis is awkward. I don't know about this one. ~~~
FutureGrind
FutureGrind
Played: 1/18. Late Evening. PC Itch. Enjoyed. I've been thinking about how to do a speedrun of this game. No one else has from what I can tell. ~~~
Hades
Hades
Played: 1/19. Evening. PC EGS. Enjoyed. ~~~ Played: 1/19. Late Evening. Decided to jump back into this game. A lot has changed. I had to restart but that's fine since I planned on doing that any. I was able to get to the Bone Hydra and almost beat it. ~~~ Played: 1/20. Late Evening. ~~~ Played: 1/21. Early Evening. ~~~ Played: 1/21. Evening. ~~~ Played: 1/21. Late Evening. ~~~ Played: 1/22. Midnight. I was actually able to beat the Bone Hydra. Not once, but 3 times! ~~~ Played: 1/22. Late Morning. Was able to get to the 3rd boss. That 3rd area is really rough. They also must have made the Hydra a bit easier. Though I'm no longer playing with those skull options they had before. I still have yet to meet Demeter or get access to fishing. Maybe I should focus more on the gems. ~~~ Played: 1/22. Early Evening. ~~~ Played: 1/22. Evening. ~~~ Played: 1/25. Afternoon. ~~~ Played: 1/25. Early Evening. Was able to beat the Minotaur and got to the final zone. That area is extremely tough. I now can get to the boss of the 3rd area pretty regularly too. ~~~ Played: 1/26. Midnight. ~~~ Played: 1/26. Early Evening. I've come so incredibly close to actually beating Hades. Fought him twice now. Only seen Demeter once. The fishing is fine. I think it could be a lot better. ~~~ Played: 1/26. Afternoon. ~~~ Played: 1/26. Early Evening. I'm trying to max out the hearts with Chaos and even with the egg they do not show. ~~~ Played: 1/27. Midnight. Came so close again, but Hades spawned in the level 3 enemies. Which were a major pain. ~~~ Played: 1/28. Early Evening. ~~~ Played: 1/28. Evening. Was able to beat Hades... almost. There is a second form... I got my first and second duo boon though. There was a bug where I sold it between levels 3 and 4 and did not receive my money. ~~~ Played: 1/28. Evening. Almost beat Hades again! Got to him with all my death defies, but my build wasn't good for enemies that move around a lot. ~~~ Played: 1/29. Early Evening. ~~~ Played: 1/29. Evening. ~~~ Played: 1/30. Early Evening. I was able to beat Hades!! Wooo! I had a really good run with Zeus. Now doing the path of punishment stuff, but I may give this game a break. ~~~ Played: 2/1. Midnight. ~~~ Played: 2/1. Early Morning. Spent a lot of Titan blood to upgrade the weapon aspects. The new spear is interesting. I am finding even with 1 PoP that I can't get too far beyond the bone hydra. ~~~ Played: 2/1. Early Evening. ~~~ Played: 2/2. Midnight. I have the aspect of Hera. It's interesting but it does not mix well with Demeter's cast at all. ~~~ Played: 6/23. Late Evening. ~~~ Played: 6/24. Midnight. Decided to try the new update. Seems like a lot of stuff since I last played. I was able to get to Hades no problem. Even got to his 2nd form. Couldn't do much after that though. I should really put it down until the full release comes out. One last thing is I don't know if Nyx's design matches her voice anymore. Mostly her facial expression. ~~~ Played: 9/22. Midnight. Finally dug into v1.0. Completely restarted. Sad that it doesn't seem that they added any new deities with it, but I only did like 3 runs. Died on Meg the first run, then got pretty far into Asphodel the next two. Starting with 50 HP is so rough. ~~~ Played: 9/26. Morning. Played for like 3 hours. Got to the boss of the third world. They've changed so much about the early game. Some of which I don't really agree with. Like Nyx's item is different. Still, it's a lot of fun. ~~~ Played: 9/26. Late Morning. ~~~ Played: 9/26. Afternoon. Unlocked the fists and they seem alright. ~~~ Played: 9/27. Early Morning. ~~~ Played: 9/27. Morning. Was able to get to Hades' 2nd form with a really nifty Zeus + shield run. Now I have most of the stuff unlocked and can upgrade the weapons. Starting to fill like my old runs. Still die at the Bone Hydra every now and again. I do like that the bosses all have varieties and there's some new mini bosses. ~~~ Played: 9/27. Early Evening. Beat Hades for the first time! Using the bow no less! I had the homing shot aspect of the bow, but that wasn't really all the important. It was more Aphrodite's attack boon, and the Demeter's cast + cast upgrade coupled with Artemis and Demeter's duo. Basically I just let the cast take care of things while I ran around taking pot shots when I could. I also had Pressure Points and some attack-up jerky. Artemis's call also helped a bunch. I really do like how they set up the fake ending. Though apparently if you beat it enough times there's an actual ending too. I did end up looking up some actual Greek mythology a couple days ago so I probably spoiled myself on where the overall story is. Still it seems stuff would got a lot easier if folks just swallowed their pride and talked openly. ~~~ Played: 9/27. Evening. Had a really bad run with the spear where I just couldn't get any damage. ~~~ Played: 9/29. Evening. ~~~ Played: 9/29. Late Evening. Got a second win with the Zeus shield. ~~~ Played: 9/29. Early Evening. Had a bad run with the Hera bow and am at a the end of a pretty good run with the Chaos shield. ~~~ Played: 9/29. Evening. I was able to get a 3rd win with that Shield run. Even cleared out all of Styx, though I almost lost because of that. Now I'm having a ok-ish Rail run. It keeps cycling between the Rail, Bow, and Shield for the bonus darkness and that's very annoying. I would like a run with the sword (which I've barely used), spear or gloves!!! ~~~ Played: 10/1. Early Evening. ~~~ Played: 10/1. Evening. Had a very silly sword run with the cursed upgrade where it cuts your health by 60% and restores 2 HP every attack. Which I got in the first room. It was also a crit build that was backed up by the lightning rod duo and the double slam with doom. I didn't lose a death defy until Hades himself. Win #4!!! ~~~ Played: 10/2. Early Evening. Had two runs that both ended at Hades since I just could not get the upgrades I wanted. The Lucifer gun seems OK but I didn't really like the upgrades for it. I was trying to build towards a the vengeance duo from Zeus/Ares in the 2nd run, but it just would not give them once I got to the final area. Then the anvil gave me the bad dash upgrade for the spear and that lost me the run. Having lower dash just makes that upgrade completely useless and very bad. ~~~ Played: 10/2. Late Morning. ~~~ Played: 10/2. Afternoon. I'm on a 3 run winstreak! All I need to do is get a win with the gloves. Now if only they put dark thrust on them!! ~~~ Played: 10/2. Evening. ~~~ Played: 10/2. Late Evening. Had a 4-run winstreak, but then had too bad runs. Ah well. ~~~ Played: 10/3. Late Morning. ~~~ Played: 10/3. Afternoon. Got my first win with the Fists. They work very well with Atena's attack boon. ~~~ Played: 10/3. Evening. Saw Credits! My last run was not especially memorable or interesting. I don't think I'm as high on this game as other folks mostly because I've been playing it through out its development. But I do like it. I don't think the story is as good Pyre mostly because they're not working with original characters so it's not as inventive or unique. The music is also not a varied or interesting as Pyre's and is mostly just fine. Still a great game and I'm glad it's getting a lot of attention. ~~~ Played: 10/7. Late Evening. Did a few more runs because I was feeling like it. Got some prophecies done and had a run where Poseidon gave me the fishing boon in the first room and I brought in like 15 fish. Probably more fish than I had ever seen in the whole 1.0 patch. haha. ~~~ Played: 10/8. Evening. I think I unlocked all the weapons now? I had a fun run with the Hera bow with the Ares Cast plus a bunch of buffs. It was pretty good. First level 3 Heat. ~~~ Played: 10/10. Afternoon. Died with the Beowulf shield. Ah well. ~~~ Played: 10/10. Late Evening. I just can't get a good run with the Guan Yu spear at all. ~~~
The Pedestrian
The Pedestrian
Started: 2/2. Evening. PC Steam. Mixed. This game has a cool idea and an interesting aesthetic, but it falls back on just pretty typical puzzle-platformer and one-hit-death platformer tropes. It isn't very interesting beyond the nifty premise. ~~~ Finished: 2/6. Evening. I think this game has a cool gimmick and some good moments, but the actual level design is pretty mediocre and gets tedious towards the end. I'm not sure if it's a good idea executed poorly or is the best one could do with this sort of idea. I'm leaning towards the former because a lot of the puzzles end up being rather simple and instead just require you to execute the steps in the correct order. I think it will make for an interesting speedrun (which at the time of this record is already under 13 minutes.) I think it will probably win a some awards since it's concept is clever and it has some nice moments. But I don't think it's a very good or enjoyable. The moment-to-moment gameplay is kind of old hat. There are better simple looking puzzle platformers out there that require you to do push boxes and collect keys. That part of the game feels straight out of a 2007 browser game. It's not terrible, but it's nothing special. Sometimes the way it's gimmick and the puzzle-platformer stuff is combined in an interesting way, but then you die because of a tiny error and have to resolve the level. It controls pretty finicky too. Usually that's fine, but sometimes the lack of precision will cause an annoying death or put an item in a place you didn't intend. The audio for this game is fine. The music is good, if a bit generic, when it's playing. The problem is that the music will stop and you're just left with the sound of wind or other ambience. But that doesn't always happen. In some areas the music seems to loop. I can't tell if that's intentional or not. I just didn't like this game very much. Maybe I'll write a review, but it's I don't know if I want to spend the time. ~~~
Temtem
Temtem
Started: 2/2. Late Evening. PC Steam. Enjoyed. I haven't really played a pokemon styled game in probably 25 years. This game piqued my interest. It certainly doesn't really explain itself well at the start, but ah well. I'm sure it will in time. ~~~ Played: 2/2. Midnight. I think I'm liking this game. Now that I got a little more experience and looked some things up. I still don't really understand the EVs and TVs or whatever they're called. I just know that high green numbers are good. haha. ~~~ Played: 2/5. Midnight. ~~~
Kunai
Kunai
Started: 2/8. Afternoon. PC Steam. Enjoyed. This game seems ok. I don't think I agree with the gamefeel thoughts that Ben had in the quicklook, but it's fine so far. ~~~ Played: 2/8. Early Evening. Mixed. I don't know, there's something about this game that doesn't feel quite right. I think the level design/path they have you take is more awkward than fluid. Like they put you at a switch that opens a door on the other side of the map rather than the door right in front of you. Then you go to the door it opened and that has a switch that opens the door where the first switch was. You can get around this by using a death warp, but you should have to do that. I just got the shurikens and that area sucked. The spikes deal too much damage and the hit box for the character is too deceptive. The swing with the grappling hooks doesn't feel right. Sometimes I can get a lot of momentum and other times none. There's a little jump that they do after you release from a wall and it almost always puts me where I don't want to be. I'd rather it just drop me down. ~~~ Played: 2/9. Midnight. I got to the slime boss that they did in the quick look. However I don't have a sword upgrade that I think Ben may have had. Each little slime takes 2 hits to kill and I cannot kill them fast enough without taking tons of damage. They restore very little health on death too. This boss is basically impossible and the way it's saved I cannot leave. I have to beat the boss to get out of here. I'm basically softlocked because I don't have the tools the game expects you to have, but like. they let me get to that point. ~~~
Redo!
Redo!
Started: 2/9. Early Evening. PC Itch. Enjoyed. This is a horror metroidvania. Not my usually taste, but it's so far all atmosphere. It's pretty cool so far, but I don't know how far I'll get into it since it's very easy to die. ~~~ Played: 2/9. Evening. Part of me was torn because I thought I got myself stuck like in Kunai, but it turns out I just had to explore more. This game definitely wants to be a sort of post apocalyptic Dark Souls of a sorts. It has very Souls-like level design. More than just the "unlock a shortcut" but like "explore to find all the little goodies". I do like how you can peak into a room from a safe location and see what (literally) horrors await you. Anyway, I got a rocket launcher and riot shield. ~~~ Played: 2/12. Late Evening. A bit lost as to where to go. Apparently I missed a lot in the earlier areas. Fortunately this game is really small. I kinda like that. I'm actually really digging the aesthetic and level design, but I find it hard to play for more than about 45 minutes at a time. ~~~
