This game came out mid November and I've already put 157 hours into it and I haven't even touched the multiplayer yet. DAI is one of those games I can start playing when I wake up and look at the clock later only to realize its time for me to go back to sleep. While the core story is fairly boring outside of a couple of great missions I enjoyed exploring every area to the fullest and doing almost all of the side missions. The cast of characters is the best of any Bioware game to date in my opinion and all of the side missions involving your party members were great. If I had to pick my favorite it would probably be Dorian with The Iron Bull not far behind. I'm currently almost done with my 2nd play through and already have my 3rd, 4th, and 5th planned out. While I enjoyed both Dragon Age Origins and 2 neither of them compare to my love for Inquisition and I'm very happy to name it my game of the year for 2014.
I bought the original Dark Souls a couple years ago but never gave it a shot until Load Our Last Souls convinced me to give it a try. Thanks to that Dark Souls quickly became one of my favorite games ever and while the sequel doesn't quite live up the the standards of the first game I still think it is one of the best games of the year. I've beaten it several times on both the PS3 and PC versions of the game and have enjoyed it every time. I haven't got a chance to play the DLC yet but I hear they're very good from my friend and I plan to pick them up for Christmas.
Like most people I'm very skeptical of licensed games which is why Shadow of Mordor was such a nice surprise. The Arkham games have been some of my favorites for the past couple years and Assassins Creed is one of my favorite series (until Unity ruined that), however I think Mordor took the best parts of those games and made them better. The nemesis system is the coolest new idea to be implemented in a game and I won't be surprised if we see other developers try to implement something similar in their future games.
I never played Bastion before so I didn't understand all the hype Transistor was getting especially because to me a transistor was just a subject of discussion in one of my classes. That being said after looking at it more it seemed like something right up my alley so I gave it a shot. While the combat is fun its not what has this game so high on my list. The art style, voice acting, music, and story are what made me love this game and the soundtrack is still a mainstay for me.
I enjoyed MLB 14 so much it actually made me start to watch baseball. I've always had a passing interest in the sport but could never bring myself to sit down and watch a game and this spur of the moment purchase helped me break that barrier down. The controls are great, it's fun to play and the option to speed up games by starting mid count is great for keeping the games on the move. This is one the best put together sports games I've played and I can't wait for the next one.
I've enjoyed the show for many years now and couldn't be happier with this game. Sure the combat's pretty easy but it hits that same vibe the Mario and Luigi games did for me. The main draw for this game is how well it nailed the show's humor, I can't think of a game I've played that has done humor as well and as consistently as this one. This game is a must for anyone who's a fan of the show.
I know technically this didn't come out this year but thanks to the PC release I can talk about this game even if the one I played this year was the PS3 version. I enjoyed how Valkyria Chronicles basically took the tired video game setting of World War 2 and created a unique spin on it. I love how the game went out of its way to make their characters human and not just a unit that I couldn't care less about. The fact that most of the characters in the game weren't career soldiers made them much more believable and easier to connect with on a personal level. The combat is extremely refreshing in a world of similar shooters and standard turn based strategy, and very intense on some of the harder levels. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys action, rpg, and/or strategy games.
This game is mostly a placeholder for the MGS HD collection but I still enjoyed it for what it was. I played through MGS 3 a couple years after it came out and its still my favorite in the series, but I was always reluctant to try 1, 2, and 4 as I was afraid that the different setting and time period would not appeal to me in the same way. So when I got the collection I finally gave 2 a chance and I loved it, the pure crazy at the end of that game was great, and now I've played through 1 and 4 as well. Ground Zeros wasn't even on my radar until after the HD collection so I owe its spot on the list to that. Ground Zeros is easily the best playing MGS game to date and I can't wait to experience more of this gameplay in The Phantom Pain.
Persona 3 and 4 are some of my all time favorite games so I'll give almost anything with the Persona tag on it a try. Seeing the characters from 3 and 4 interact with each other was an absolute delight for me and the dungeon exploring and mapping of the Etrian Odyssey series was a novelty I quite enjoyed. While I prefer 3 and 4's combat I like that Atlus is willing to try different things with this series since it makes the wait for Persona 5 a bit easier.
Like most people Destiny managed to disappoint me and I expected it to end up higher on this list when I first played it. However like I told my friends Destiny is a game that I enjoyed despite its flaws. I played through most of it with my roommate. We did almost every story mission and strike together (many times of course) but I kept on playing when he burned out. I got invited to do the raid by someone I had only just done a few strikes with but those 6 hours were by far the most fun I had with the game. I hope Bungie keeps trying to improve destiny as I still enjoy it, just not as much as I was hoping I would.
