"This Time: We're Bringing Back the Sonic You Knew and Loved!"

A collection of various Sonic-brand games over the years that were heavily sold on the premise of returning to "Classic" Sonic The Hedgehog form. Similar to New Coke conspiracies, I believe that one shitty Saturn game was invented for the sole purpose of making people feel nostalgia for something that still existed.

Expect another list to follow shortly, organizing the plethora of slightly-altered-titled collections the original Genesis Sonic games have appeared in; ie: Mega Collection Plus, Genesis Collection, Sonic Classic Collection, Gems Collection, Sonic Advance.

List items

  • "The year 2011 marked 20 years since the original Sonic the Hedgehog debuted on the Sega Genesis. Sonic Generations plays off that anniversary aspect by remastering some of the most iconic levels from Sonic's entire franchise history in 3D. Gameplay is broken up between Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic as separate characters. Classic Sonic sees levels from a strictly side-scrolling perspective, with many of the game mechanics being pulled from the series' 16-bit heritage."

  • "The stages are in full 3D in which Sonic can run and jump in any direction, periodically changing to a fixed 2D perspective for classical 2D gameplay. The 2D part of the stages take up about 70% of the level, with plenty of vertical level design for platforming. The 3D segments, however, are narrow, and encourage high speed acrobatics."

  • According to Ken Ballogh, the associate brand manager from Sega, the game was developed to please the older Sonic fans that have been asking for a new 2D Sonic game for consoles. He calls the game a "critical first step to bring back Sonic to his roots."

  • "Sonic Unleashed frequently shifts between a classic side-scrolling perspective and a behind-the-back 3D perspective in an attempt to provide the best of both worlds..."

  • "Play as either as Sonic the Hedgehog or Blaze the Cat, in this throwback to Sonic's 2D days with new boost features and tricks!"

  • From Wikipedia: "Play as either as Sonic the Hedgehog or Blaze the Cat, in this throwback to Sonic's 2D days with new boost features and tricks!"

  • *In name only. However, Sega claims this to be the start of "modern Sonic era" and a way of bringing back the good ole' "Adventure era Sonic" you knew and loved.

  • "Sonic Advance returns to the 2D gameplay of the Genesis originals, having Sonic get from the beginning to the end of the stage without dying and going as fast as possible."

  • **Not a return to 2D Classic Sonic as it were, but still, a return to proper platforming. From Wikipedia: "Then Sega employee Yuji Naka had been unhappy with prior treatment of Sonic, especially in the Sega Saturn racing game Sonic R..." "Screw Attack called Sonic 3D Blast 'a 2-D overhead with a bad angle' and named it the 5th worst Sonic Game." "The Sonic X-treme debacle has been cited as a reason for the ultimate failure of the Sega Saturn. With the Sonic the Hedgehog series of games being attributed to much of the company's prior system, the Genesis, success, and Sony and Nintendo both having flagship 3D platformers available early in the life cycle of their consoles (Crash Bandicoot and Super Mario 64 respectively), Sega was expected by the fans to follow suit and produce an official 3D Sonic game. With the games cancellation, the Saturn never did receive an exclusive Sonic platforming game, but rather only the Genesis port of Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Jam, a compilation of the 2D Genesis Sonic titles, and Sonic R, a racing game. Sonic's debut in a full 3D platform game wasn't until 1999, with Sonic Adventure as a Dreamcast launch title, well after the death of the Saturn."

  • Hey that first game came out so long ago, the sequel felt like a plea for nostalgia for Episode 1 itself.
