Overview
Cleopatra VII Philopator (69 BC – August 12, 30 BC), known to history as Cleopatra, was the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt (Location). She was a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, a family of Greek origin that ruled Egypt after Alexander's death, up until its conquest by the Roman Empire (Concept). Cleopatra had a son with Roman emperor Julius Caesar, and later became a lover of Roman officer and ally of Caesar, Mark Antony. Together, they had twins, and she served as Antony's ally in his battle for succession against Octavian after Caesar's assassination. However, Antony committed suicide following defeat at the Battle of Actium, and Cleopatra soon followed, dying by the poisonous bite of an asp. Her son with Caesar, Caesarion, was subsequently elevated to the status of pharaoh, but he was quickly killed by Octavian, and all of Egypt was annexed by the Roman Empire.
