@arbitrarywater: The first episode is downright tame compared to season three (after Kuro shows up). My morbid curiosity and hearing the Kalied Liner movie is surprisingly good (and that Illya’a not the protag) has kept me powering through. It’s about 70/30 plot to fan-disservice. For people who’ve played Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, the regular plot is kinda neat. Season 1’s definitely the worst, plot-wise.

Sure, I was planning to eventually give Xillia, Vesperia, and Berseria (i.e. the ones I’ve heard generally positive things about) a shot, but the ones with more mixed/ambiguous reception like Graces F, Zestiria, and especially this one were going to be worth an optional glance at best.

For what it's worth, I enjoyed my time with Graces F (and I cleared almost the entire game before my PS3 died), but the cast is definitely one of the game's weakest points. It's not awful overall, though. I remember liking the combat, worldbuilding, and overall plot well enough. And some of the minor characters were alright, if I recall (it's been quite a while since I played it).

There's definitely a level of variety and ambition to a lot of those PS1 (and to a lesser extent PS2) JRPGs that I'd like to take a look at... if it was 5 years ago and I had more free time on my hands. I still mean to give something like Vagrant Story or Suikoden II a shot, and I still have that fancy pants Zodiac version of Final Fantasy XII hanging around, so I'm not totally done, but I think I'm okay never playing more Chrono Cross or Legend of Dragoon, for example.

That's too bad about Legend of the Dragoon. It's one of my favorites from the PS1 era, so much so I replay it every few years. I've got a lot of nostalgia for it, though. It's gotten harder to go back to since the combat is so latency-sensitive. It's pretty rough running emulated on a PS3 through my entire home theater setup.

Isn't Full Metal Panic from like.. 15 years ago? I remember watching that I think way back when. They keep yelling stuff about "Lambda drivers"? lol

Yes, but it was an excellent combination of mecha show and a rom com. Fumoffu was all rom com, and TSR was pretty much all mecha. All three series are on Crunchyroll if anybody wants to catch up. I've not seen the fourth season yet.

@arbitrarywater: Yeah, DitF didn't go out with a bang or a wtf, but with a whimper. It's almost as if they changed their minds about the whole plot around ep 19. Were they expecting another season that didn't materialize? Was there some staff turnover? Creative disagreements? In the end, we'll never know, but this is probably the biggest whiplash I've gotten from an anime in a while. Since Eva 3.0, at least.

So, uh, Darling in the Franxx is just gonna do the end of Gurren Lagann by way of End of Evangelion, huh? That makes sense given the pedigree, and I hope the final episode is either some weird, Gainax-ass trippy shit or some crazy, Trigger-ass trippy shit. That might at least ease the amount of creeping indifference I feel for a series that started off going for batshit and has since muddled its way towards a really obvious conclusion.

@bladededge: I'm betting at least 3 to 1 we spend the bulk of the last episode in metaphysics land. I think the real stretch at this point would be hoping for an ending that makes any sort of narrative sense. Once the aliens were in all hope for any kind of grounded conclusion was out the window. At this point, I'm just interested to see just how off the rails it can get.

I guess we'll find out either way on Saturday.

Since Summer anime season is coming up soon, are there any shows I should be paying attention to?

That depends entirely on what you're into and what you have been watching from last season.

That said, nothing leaps out at me.

... The actual liquid crystal display is pretty much the same...

That's not necessarily true, either. You're right in that LED only refers to the backlight, but there are three main technologies of LCD display in use. In increasing order of quality, there's Twisted Nematic (TN), Vertical Alignment (VA), and In-Plane Switching (IPS). The only way to know what a TV is using for sure is to take it apart and look up the panel model, or read a review (like Rtings) that does. You can generally guess what a TV is by looking at it, though. TN have really bad color shifting at high viewing angles.

I know E3 interrupted this thread, but we need to talk about how Darling in the Franxx pulled the exact same "It's aliens!" twist that also was in Kill La Kill and Gurren Lagann. I dunno, I was actually really hot on the series right up until they bothered explaining everything (and, even if you take its silliness at face value, it still feels like a bad, lazy tribute to the Evangelion episode it's clearly emulating), but I feel like it's drifting on its way towards what could be a rather predictable, straightforward ending. I'd be more shocked about Zero Two probably dying if not for the way it was blatantly implied in the second OP.

EDIT: That said, My Hero Academia is still amazing, and I'm very into where it's going. Hinamatsuri has also gotten consistently better, and I really hope it gets another season.

I dunno about lazy tribute, there are some shot-for-shot recreations of Eva scenes in eps 20 and 21, but cheesy and over-the-top I could definitely agree with. The Franxx guys clearly really adore Eva. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I'm also not sure how straightforward the ending is going to try to be, especially if they want to go for the traditional Gainax mind screw. Still, though, I will have to admit, these last few episodes were so uneven, rushed, and derivative that it has really tarnished my opinion of Darlifra.

I think someone said it earlier in this thread but, draw distances. Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild spoiled me. That game developed an exponential amount of mystique and genuine adventure just by having dynamic details in the distance. I'm not going to spoil anything here but the shit you see in the distance in that game hasn't been matched by any game even on the significantly stronger platforms...

Like what, do tell? I played the Wii U version for like 70 hours and I don't remember anything special with draw distance that stuck with me.
