We should absolutely have to be doing this in 2020, unless you just don't want faster load times.

I'm okay with this. Load times have never bothered me and the best thing I ever did with my PS4 was buy a 4TB external hard drive to never worry about storage space again.

But it's not just "load" times - if it was just traditional start of game / start of level load times they'd probably allow it.

But these fast drives are also going to be used for streaming assets - i.e. loading geometry, textures, sounds etc on the fly as you run around a level or an open world. It's how these machines are planning to get around the relative lack of additional memory over the previous generation - they can't really have more data in memory at the start of a level, but they can load it super quickly on the fly as it's needed.

A slow drive would just completely break games that used those techniques (which is probably going to end up being a lot of games as devs strive to get the most out of the new machines).

Edit - the PS5 not allowing external storage of PS5 games is utter crap though :-(

Jeff has said many times that putting on a headset and "disappearing" into VR just isn't something that fits his lifestyle at home.

Interested to see what comes up here.

I only occasionally get to use the family TV for gaming, so I usually use a cheap no-frills 24" TV for my Xbox One.

Getting a Series X in a couple of weeks and would like to upgrade the small screen, but for various reasons I can't really go any bigger than 24".

As far as I can see to get anything better (4K, HDR etc) in the TV category I'd have to go to at least 32", so that's out. I could easily get a 24" 1080p 144Hz freesync monitor, which would be a step up, but if I want to up the resolution to 1440p 144Hz freesync the options get way more limited at 24", and HDR seems to be a complete no-no at anything less than 27".

So I think 24" 1080p 144Hz freesync might be my best bet / only realistic option, but interested to see what might come up here.

Edit: removed unnecessary waffling

@bigsocrates: Yeah, I also bounced off WatchDogs 2 when it came out, so not keen to risk Legion.

I do fancy that Immortals Fenyx Rising though, but didn't mention it 'cos it's not a launch game (though only a week or so after) and more importantly, Ubisoft's recent troubles mean I dunno if I'll be happy buying it.

I'm planning to just keep playing whatever I'm playing on my One X and just switch over to the Series X.

Though I will definitely also try the Series X enhanced games that are on GamePass (e.g. Gears Tactics and Tetris Effect)

Over 300 Xbox games in my library (X1 and back-compat 360, including games from Gold) plus Game Pass on top of that made it a no-brainer to stick with the Series X.

Never got a PS4 this gen, so will probably get a PS5 at some point, maybe in a few years if they get a bit cheaper.

@petesix0: Why would you expect anything else? Sony's not gonna allow you to share your disc with your mates and give them all a free copy of the game.

@bisonhero: Well said. Obviously this news is worrying, but a lot of this thread has just been unnecessary fantasy-business-manager nonsense.

@arjailer: Greenberg spoke a few months ago regarding Game Pass not being a money maker atm. Source

He said it's not making much profit yet, which I can completely believe as they're all but giving GamePass away right now with that $1 upgrade deal.

So I can imagine Microsoft are probably having to dip into their own pockets to subsidise payments to developers until the service becomes self-sustaining. But those kinds of numbers (10+ million subscribers x $10 to $15 = billions a year) suggest to me that in the long term the service could sustain itself while paying developers a fair compensation for loss of sales.
