Like any good top ten list, mine is about 50 films long, but here are some that stand out at the moment:

  • Stop Making Sense
  • We are the Best!
  • About Time
  • The Sound of Music
  • We Need to Talk About Kevin
  • School of Rock
  • Rear Window
  • E.T.
  • Tomboy
  • My Neighbor Totoro

  1. Inglorious Bastards - Because Brad Pitt - I WANT MY SCALPS GODDAMMIT
  2. Forrest Gump - Run forrest! Run!
  3. Lethal Weapon 1-3 - Mel Gibson
  4. High Fidelity - For some reason i like this movie so much, it's everything about it, except for Iben Hjejle. The music, characters and the story is great.
  5. Leon
  6. Fight Club - Because Brad Pitt
  7. Blood Diamond - I still think this is the best movie Leonardo Dicaprio has done.
  8. No Country For Old Men - I love the book, i'm crazy for the Coen Brothers
  9. Legends Of the Fall - Because Brad Pitt
  10. Beast Of no Nation - This movie was one of the biggest surprises of last year - atleast that's my opinion. The first time acting by Abraham Atting is insane.

Okay so these are in no particular order, except for Inglorious Bastards at no. 1 .. That movie is a masterpiece by Quentin Tarantino and i can't think of any other movie that matches this in such a stylized world war 2 story

I've finally been around long enough to have an old comment in a bumped thread! Horray!
New list without reading old list.

1. The Thing.
2. Sunshine.
3. Moon.
4. Interstellar.
5. The Raid and Dredd
6. The Hateful Eight.
7. Whiplash.
8. Tron Legacy.
9. Mad Max Fury Road.
10. The Ring.

@zolroyce said:

Super High five to all of John Carpenters The Thing fans I'm seeing.

In no particular order besides what came to my mind first.

1. John Carpenters The Thing.
2. Moon.
3. Everything is Illuminated.
4. Sunshine.
5. The Shining.
6. The Raid: Redemption. Tied with, Dredd.
7. Children of Men.
8. The Fifth Element.
9. The Dark Knight
10. Aliens

Alright well, some differences, but I stand by both lists anyways.
I really loved the way @ewansuttie put it. Well said indeed.

Like any good top ten list, mine is about 50 films long...

I had a rough list written out, but then I deleted it. Top tens were for when I hadn't seen enough old popular cinema. I'm finding great movies all the time.

No Snatch - Because Brad Pitt?

He's good in all those rolls, but Snatch is on another level of "who the fuck knew he could do that?"

It's a darn good movie, too.

In no particular order

The Dark Knight

Groundhog Day

Inception

Her

The Storm of the Century (Certainly not in the top 100 movies of all time, but I'm a sucker for Stephen King and this movie does King in a way no other has so it's top 5 for me).

Beyond that I couldn't say, I don't really have a top 10. Loving the other lists here though, I'm really gonna have to watch some of these movies. Maybe I'll catch 12 Angry Men sometime this week.

I've gone for films that I feel have importance in the history of cinema and that tell a story that goes further then the films themselves. None of them are perfect but I think there is something of real value in all of them.

-Voyage dans la Lune (1902 George Méliès)

Méliès was maybe more of a magician then he was a filmmaker. But most of all he was a pioneer. This spirit is evident in Voyage dans la Lune. It also encapsulates the spirit of the time. Science and technologie were opening up avenues people had never dreamed of before. A new world full of promise and wonder was looming. I sometimes wish I could see this short movie trough the eyes of someone of that time.

-Metropolis (1927 Fritz Lang)

Europe has gone trough WWI. The once hopeful vision of the future was shattered. Metropolis shows us a future were machines run the show and were there is no room for humanity. Fritz Lang's expressionistic style conjures up a cold and hard world. The social unrest of the time is also mirrored in this silent science fiction epic.

-Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928 Buster Keaton )

Physical comedy doesn't play very well with audiences today. But the artistic and often death defying stunts that Keaton pulled off in this silent comedy are second to none. When you ask me to choose between Chaplin or Keaton I will go Keaton any day of the week.

-Un Chien Andalou (1929 Luis Bunuel)

Luis Bunuel made this together with Salvador Dali. There is no real story in this movie but it is captivating none the less. It has some truly disturbing imagery and leaves you wondering what kind of drugs these guys were taking back then. This movie also speaks strongly about the artistic scene of Paris at that time. People were trying new things and delving deep into their subconsciousness to see what they could find. Some of it wasn't pretty but all of it was full of symbolism and revolutionary zeal. If you are wondering were David Lynch got his mustard, look no further.

- Triumph des Willens (1935 Leni Riefensthal)

Cinema as propaganda to bolster a terrible regime. A masterfully composed ode to a fictitious common will. The craftsmanship of Riefensthal is visible throughout this brain washing attempt. How much of the enthousiasme is real and how much of it is orchestrated? Did this work really sway people to join the national socialist party? Does the artist hold responsibility or did she have no other choice? Is it OK to see beauty in something that is made to promote a terrible doctrine? These are the questions that make this film worth watching.

-Ikuru (1952 Akira Kurosawa)

This movie tells the story of a man who is dying and has lost all hope. He meets a younger woman who takes it on herself to show him that life is worth living. Kurosawa is a poet of images. His editing weaves the scenes together in a very flowing way. To me this kind of cinema is too few and far between these days.

-Easy Rider (Dennis Hopper 1969)

A bit of a clumsy movie about freedom and the american dream. A real product of its time and with one of the best sound tracks of all time. I always feel like dropping everything and hitting the open road after watching it.

-Akira (1988 Katsuhiro Otomo)

The seminal anime that showed the west that animation could be an adult entertainment form. When I watched this for the first time as a teenager I knew I needed more of it. TETSUOOOOOOOOO!!!!

-Dancer in the dark (2000 Lars Von Trier)

It takes some doing to make me like a musical. Von trier and Björk were not the best friends but this masterpiece shows them both giving it their best. Von Trier is the maybe the best director of our time and Björk is maybe the best vocalist. The end result is a hearth breaking and deeply human story that stays with you for a long time.

Always struggle with 10 but here we go. General note, these are favourites in the way that I could put these in at any time and pretty much enjoy them, if I was to come up with a list of what I felt were the best films of all time, there would be some differences.

  • Blade Runner
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark
  • Superman: The Movie
  • Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
  • The French Connection
  • Planet of the Apes (1968)
  • Casablanca
  • The Thing (1982)
  • Dazed and Confused
  • Boogie Nights

1. - Andrei Rublev

In no particular order.

Stalker

The Thing (1982)

Wall-E (It should really be Ikiru seeing as it's both a better movie, and the one I would rather watch, but Wall-E holds a special place in my heart.)

Seven Samurai

The Seventh Seal

The Godfather (Saw the chronological cut on HBO, and now it's the only way I want to watch it. 10x better that way)

Solaris

Taxi Driver

Kill Bill

  • Star Wars IV through VI (All three are honestly inseparable in my mind, though Empire's the best)

It's super cool seeing all The Thing love going on. It's the best horror movie ever after all. My list is probably gonna be mostly the stuff I can remember, so it's probably not 100% accurate. Anyways, here it be:

1. Repo Man (1984)

2. Blade Runner (1982)

3. The Thing (1982)

4. Videodrome (1983)

5. Sorcerer (1977)

6. Children of Men (2006)

7. There Will Be Blood (2007)

8. No Country for Old Men (2007)

9. The Raid (2012) / The Raid 2 (2014)

10. The Beyond (1981)

2006-2007 was a really formative year, film-wise it seems. I also can't choose between The Raid 1 or 2 so I cheated.

Oh jeez... sorry about the essay, but here we go.

10. The babadook: Look, I can understand some people's dislike towards this movie, mainly because of its slightly annoying characters... slightly, is the umm... word I'll use lightly here. What I mean is that it makes me want to punch some people in the face through the screen okay? Another reason is because it's not necessarily a horror versus a drama thriller, so that misled some people, but overall a solid film relying on real horror instead of cheap jumpscares, and a very unconventional ghost story that I can only explain with two words, absolutely amazing. Overall a 8.4 out of 10 from a critical standpoint

9. Eves bayou: I'm a sucker for a good drama and this movie is no exception. The stellar performance and sheer amount of beauty in this mystery drama really shines through. Some people complain about this movie being pretentious, and sure... it yales itself very seriously... does that mean it's bad? Not necessarily. Overall I'll give it an 8.5 out of 10

8. Airplane: The most clever and most feel good movie that I have ever seen to this day. Just the sheer simplicity in its nature and storyline and... stupidity in its humor. It's honestly impossible to make a completely... stellar movie out of such a... basic storyline, but airplane manages to instead of relying on drama and thrilling things, which it still does at some points, it focuses on the humor, which makes this movie a diamond in the dust. Hahahahahahah...hahah...ha...h.h. 8.7-10

7. Seven pounds. This drama starring will smith... hits you where it hurts. It doesn't pull any punches, and just, makes it impossible for you to make it to the end without balling your eyes out... Now, this movies has its flaws. It takes itself... way to seriously. To this point not giving you any compi relief moments, which... sorta sets you up for the films dark and gloomy atmosphere. At least that's what I think, all the fuckers over at rotten tomatoes gave it a 32... oh well. 8.7-10

6. Forrest Gump: I... really can't say much about this one that hasn't been said, tom hanks... in his best... and... yeah However amazing, the story was seriously rushed towards the end, which soils the feeling for me sometimes. It's just like, hey... this character dies, and umm... so does this one, and this one. However that little nitpick, it is still a wonderful movie given too short of a run time 8.8-10

5.Big fish: Tim burton... made a this masterpiece... that I had not discovered until recently. Yep... one of the best movies in the drama aspect, and lighthearted aspect, I really wanted this higher on the list... but, the films above are so good! So... the overall story is about a man who tells some stories, might not sound too interesting... but my god... no spoilers. 9.1-10

4.Arrival: Okay... what the hell happened... what the hell happened to the average alien invasion movie, it grew like 459 crystals, beautiful ambience... stellar acting... amazing art, and a very complicated, powerful, well thought out story! So... aliens land on earth... and they are called heptapods, no spoilers, just watch it.

9.3-10

3.Up: The first 7 minutes say it all, Pixar basically rips your heart out and punts it across the highway in this, surprisingly adult film. Carl Fredrickson, an 87 year old man... always had a dream to travel to paradise falls... he shared dream with his previously deceased wife. So that's all, no spoilers... if you haven't seen it yet... what are you waiting for?

9.5-10

2.crash: Wow... racism... Wow... rape... wow... the most powerful American film that I've ever seen in my life. Crash just takes my soul and flattens it. I don't think I've ever cried so much in a movie... really... I don't know what to say it's so beautiful in its way to present emotion that it literally strikes you in a way that no movie has before...

9.7-10

So... this is the end of the line?

Before you read number one, here are some honorable mentions

Star Wars

Aliens

The conjuring 2

Kubo and the two strings

What dreams may come

Old yeller

Groundhog Day

Alright... here we go...

1.Harold and maude: Hmm... were you expecting something huge, a pen amazingly well known movie... an unoriginal pick like citizen Kane... nope. Here we have a film where you have to look for that beauty. I tend to have that ability at first glance, but some don't. It is known as a film that will grow on you like mould on wet bread. Harold and maude is very, easy going. It has the dark comedy aspect, the drama aspect, and the overall big heart of an amazing film. And so I say... that the number one... best... movie... ever... gets a rating of.......... 10-10 there are no bars that it doesn't hit, unless you're that one pissy mother of a 9 year old who rates it one star for being a 13 and up sorta movie.

Thanks for reading if you did... bye!
