The Wespe came about when the Panzer II (Object) tanks were pulled from the front line and converted into self-propelled artillery vehicles. The Panzer II turret was replaced with a 105m howitzer and a gun shield. After it saw service in 1943 on the Eastern Front, all Panzer II production was reserved for the Wespe, dropping other projects like the Marder II self-propelled anti-tank gun.
