Overview
Developed by the Capellan Confederation toward the end of the Third Succession War, the Raven is a unique light BattleMech which was designed to augment an existing lance with a number of highly specialized support functions. Although it is equipped by default with two Medium Lasers and an SRM-6, these weapons are meant to be used only if combat is unavoidable, as the Raven is rarely at an advantage in a straight fight, even against 'Mechs in its own weight class. In reality, a Raven pilot who is forced to engage in direct combat has in some respects failed already, as the 'Mech's true strength lies in its ability to provide passive aid to allied MechWarriors by way of advanced surveillance, targeting, and countermeasures. While its initial incarnation was not entirely successful in realizing its creator's vision of a cutting-edge electronic warfare platform, later technological discoveries allowed it to become just that, and in addition to its own popularity, many of its components have gone on to be incorporated in other 'Mechs.
Though the Raven does possess armaments, a significantly larger portion of its mass is devoted to its various sensory and countermeasure emplacements. Foremost among these tools are the Guardian ECM (Electronic Countermeasure) Suite, which disrupts enemy guided weaponry, and the Beagle Active Probe, which bolster's the Raven's normal sensor capability, allowing it to detect, among other things, 'Mechs that are powered down. It is also mounted with a Narc Missile Beacon, a system which the Raven can use to "paint" a target, causing even dumb-fire missiles to lock on to it. Finally, the Raven's TAG (Target Acquisition Gear) offers functionality similar to that of the Narc, allowing the Raven to spot a target so that nearby missile platforms can acquire targeting data without the need for line-of-sight.
