The 500 is a series of widely varying hammerless, pump action repeaters, all of which share the same basic receiver and action, but differ in bore size, barrel length, choke options, and magazine capacity.

The Mossberg 500 line of shotguns is popular for police work, home defense, and military applications. It has many aftermarket parts available, mostly stocks, extended magazine tubes, sights, or shell holders. It is in use with the US military, and is claimed to be the only shotgun to pass the US Army's Mil-Spec 3443E test.
