Atari CX40 Joystick
Before the dualshock etc etc there was the Atari VCS joystick that has become an iconic image in video gaming. Thanks to Commodore using the same interface it wasn't just limited to the odd game of Combat either.
Launched in 1977 the Atari VCS or 2600 console didn't really hit its stride until 1979 when the arcade game Space Invaders (Game) was ported to the console. But the lasting image that the console has left us is that of the Joystick. No article about the history of home video gaming is complete without the image, it has been printed on t-shirts of ten worn by those who may never even have used the thing and for many of us more mature gamers it is the first joystick we ever used. As time moved on though the joystick came with us as it was compatible with the Vic 20, Commodore 64 and, naturally, the Atari ST.
