During World War II, an allied reconnaissance mission revealed that the Japanese were constructing an airfield on the island of Guadalcanal. Recognizing this airfield as a threat to Australia, the United States launched the first amphibious landing of the war and managed to gain control of the airfield. The US took the airfield without much difficulty, but holding it was a whole different story. For the next six months the US battled against the Japanese who were trying to retake the airfield. The ferocious fighting by land, sea, and air ended up being a turning point in World War II as the US managed to stop the expansion of the Japanese army. The United States went on the complete the airfield the Japanese started.
