A cyberpunk crime thriller where you play public defender with a particularly killer set of skills to help defend clients against injustice.

Overview

Set in the year 2086, of the Devil is an episodic cyberpunk mystery game and visual novel, heavily inspired by Ace Attorney, developed by nth Circle Studios. The state has assumed near complete surveillance of its citizens; cameras in nearly all devices, trackers in personal cybernetics and implants, complete cataloging of any weapon in the country, and the ability to perfectly capture any crime scene in its entirety for thorough analysis. Nearly every violent crime is solved immediately and most anything that goes to trial results in a guilty verdict. Society has never been safer and it would appear on the surface as if murder were a thing of the past. On the surface, that is.

What to do then if you do happen to be wrongfully accused? Morgan, a public defense attorney with killer instincts is there to help out. With her unique and particular insights and skills she looks to help her clients while searching for the truth. Explore environments to gather evidence, meet a varied and complex cast of characters, and work yourself to the bone in court to get the outcome your clients want. And remember...always bet on red.

Story

Episode 0: "And He Shall Appear"

Morgan is assigned to be the Public Defender of a man named Carlos Flatt, accused of being the "Heartbreak Killer", a serial killer who shot 6 different women through the heart with an old, unregistered revolver, using the rare gaps in the state's surveillance system as cover. However, the 6th victim was his roommate, and strangely sloppy compared to the first 5, leading the police to believe those were practice for his real target in a crime of passion. The two cops believe they have him dead to rights, but Morgan sees a weakness in their report that might prove his innocence, and she has a good reason to know why he couldn't be the real killer...

Episode 1: "An Idle Mind"

Morgan's latest case deals with the father of modern android programming and her friend, Dr. David Ashur. The authorities have ruled his death a suicide, and David's secretary, Jess, has come to grant David's last wish of giving Morgan something hidden his company's basement. Inside a hidden wall in the basement, Morgan finds a surprisingly humanlike cyborg named Serra, not registered on any database or documentation. After hearing the news about her "father's" death, Serra refuses to believe David would commit suicide, and calls in a favor from the late doctor to get Morgan to investigate the true cause of his death. Morgan reluctantly but diligently works with Serra to get evidence to cast doubt on the State's finding of suicide, but the case takes a dramatic turn when Serra uncovers video that suggests she herself might have murdered David, forcing Morgan to find the real culprit before Serra is scrapped and Morgan herself is punished for David's death.

Episode 2: "His Due"

The illustrious House Ikariya, a suspected gangster organization, hires Morgan to defend one of their own after he was framed for killing four members of the rival Bluebloods gang. This raises a conflict of interest, as Morgan personally knows the killer: herself! Can Morgan find a way to fulfill her duty while keeping the killer's true identity under wraps?

Episode 3: "Quoting Scripture"

Political drama is abound as Morgan is strongarmed into defending one of Big Brother's most outspoken critics.

Gameplay

Similar to the Ace Attorney series of games, of the Devil is a mix of point and click adventure with a bit of mystery and gambling. As Morgan, the player can pick up clues in the environment around them, represented by gathering "Credit" Chips like at a casino. Doing this prep-work not only fills in the background of the game's setting, but can unlock extra options during questioning and interrogation scenes, in turn allowing Morgan to gain extra Chips. When the actual questioning phase begins, Morgan will put her Chips on the line to push back against her opponent's questions and statements, represented by custom playing cards on screen. In addition, if the player is feeling confident, Morgan can raise the amount of Chips she's willing to spend on an answer, raising the risk if she loses but gaining extra if she's correct. If Morgan loses all her Chips, she loses the case.

Starting from Episode 1, the player can choose to activate "Highroller Mode" for an extra challenge. In this mode, only 1 save slot will be allowed, interrogations and faceoffs will come with a timer for Morgan to respond, and the player will be barred from saving in the middle of the action. However, the player can get an even higher score by playing this mode, contributing further to the high-risk, high-reward gambling theme.
