A cel-shaded skateboarding game where you perform sick tricks to kill alien "Gawoo's". It includes a fingerboard-style controller adapter that attaches to both analog sticks for a unique gameplay style.

Overview

Yanya Caballista: City Skater, known in Japan as Yanya Caballista featuring Gawoo, is a skateboarding game developed by CAVE and published by Koei (Company) for the PlayStation 2 (Platform) in Japan on July 5, 2001 and in North America on October 1, 2001. Featuring a cel-shaded art style and wacky cast of characters (known as "Caballista"), Yanya Caballista is set in futuristic skateboard-friendly city of New San Francisco, which has been invaded by mysterious alien creatures (known as "Gawoo") that can only be defeated by the power of sick skateboarding tricks. The game is known for its unique controls that are made for an included fingerboard-style controller adapter, which mounts directly onto both analog sticks of the DualShock (Object) series of controllers. These controls make use of the position of each stick (by shifting and twisting the board) and by pressing down on each half of the board (which clicks down on either stick).

Gameplay

Controls

Although optional, the game is intended to be used with the included board controller, which is shaped like a toy fingerboard and is attached with rubber covers at the bottom of the board that wraps around the two analog sticks. While using the controller with the adapter attached (Type-A), players rotate the controller sideways so that the left stick is towards them and the right stick is away from them, with the game suggesting that players hold it in a way so that the left thumb is on top of the left stick and the right thumb is on top of the right. The standard control option (Type-B) maps all commands to a standard controller configuration. The controls include:

  • Shifting the whole board forward to push the skater board, shifting the whole board backward to reverse, and shifting the whole board left/right to turn. This is mapped to the D-Pad on Type-B, and is also used for navigating menus.
  • Twisting the board left or right while in the air to perform a spin trick. This is mapped to the L and R trigger buttons on Type-B.
  • Pressing the forward-most analog stick down (shown on the board as Triangle) causes the skater to either perform a quick 180° turn (while on the ground) or a grab trick (while in the air). This is mapped to the Triangle button on Type-B and is also used for backing out on menus.
  • Pressing the back-most analog stick down (shown on the board as Cross) causes the skater to either perform an ollie (while on the ground) or a flip trick (while in the air). This is mapped to the Cross button on Type-B and is also used for progressing through menus.
