Shaolin, also known as ShaoLin or Shao Lin and known in Japan as Lord of Fist, is a historical-fantasy 3D fighting RPG developed by Polygon Magic (Company) and published for the PlayStation (Platform) in Japan (by Media Works) on August 26, 1999 and in Europe (by THQ (Company)) on March 31, 2000. It did not receive a North American release.
From the studio behind Fighters' Impact and Vs., Shaolin is based on wuxia fiction and follows the life of a martial artist (known only as "Jun") in 19th century China (Location) as they become a master of not only their chosen martial art, but one of the greatest kung fu masters in all of China. Depending on the backstory, each playthrough features a different overall plot, most of which involve a ruthless gang led by the villainous Han Lao Tai.
Along with its RPG-style Story Mode and eight real fighting styles to choose from, the game is known for its larger-scale fights, with up to eight combatants fighting at once. The game's player-vs-player Versus mode allows up to two multi-taps at once for the full eight-player fights.
As players participates in battle through the main game, their character's age progresses. In addition, based on how much food they've eaten in previous ages, they may have a different appearance (from thin, to fit/muscular, to chubby).
One of the unique aspects to the game is when players reach the Old age during the story with male characters, with nobody wiling to fight Jun due to his age. It is eventually revealed that a mysterious foreigner, known only as Alex, is willing to become the character's successor. Accepting this proposal changes the player's character to Alex, reverting to Adult permanently while keeping the same stats.
The game includes four different types of single-match versus play: Vs. Computer, Vs. Two Players, Vs. Four Players, and Vs. Eight Players. The latter two makes use of multitaps (one for four-player and two for eight-player) and includes three different team types (the free-for-all Battle Royal, the team-based Team Battle, and the style-vs-style Battle of the Schools).
In the game's Story Mode, players only start with the basic skills of their chosen style and unlock additional techniques by progressing. In Versus Mode, all skills and techniques are unlocked from the start.
There are several characters that are unlockable for versus mode.
